Hello, and what do I expect from Sky?

      Hi everyone,

      First post here!

I'm a new Sky broadband subscriber, having just moved here from Be. I was very happy with Be's service, but once I signed up for Sky TV the price difference was just too much to ignore.

Anyway, my line went live with Sky Max yesterday. My connection stats are pretty good:

      ADSL Link . . . . . . .Downstream. . .Upstream
      Connection Speed. . . .16378 kbps. . .764 kbps
      Line Attenuation. . . .21.0 db . . . .9.4 db
      Noise Margin. . . . . .9.8 db. . . . .16.5 db

But when I actually use the speed tests, I haven't been able to get anywhere over 8Mbps downstream and around 700kbps upstream.

Is this just the speed I should expect out of Sky Max? Is this contention ratio coming into play, or what?

Also, is there any way to get Sky to switch on the Annex M extensions to give me a better uplink speed?

      regards,
      /alan

      No, they're excellent

Congestion/contention is virtually unknown on the Sky LLU network so I doubt that's the problem. There are many other possible reasons though for your low throughput, most likely being wireless issues. Are you wireless?

Next up would be a poor speedtest server, incorrect TCP/IP settings, something else using your bandwidth etc.

No, Sky don't offer Annex M.

Have you tried the Sky User - Help and Support for Sky and Sky Broadband - Broadband Packages There has been a lot of publicity recently about testers giving poor results, especially with high speed lines such as yours. The only really accurate way to test your speed is by timing a large download from a fast server, such as MS.

If you have recently joined your line will be on DLM which is liable to give you very conflicting figures until the line is 'trained'. You should have been informed of this in your activation letter and advised not to turn off your router for 10 days.

Thank you I'll keep an eye on it and, when I get a few minutes free, will try some big parallel downloads and see what I really get.

      Thanks again,

      regards,
