      Second night of snail-like speeds

A few nights ago my speed dropped back to under 1Mb -- it's normally about 6.5 (I use thinkbroadband's speedtester). The next day all was fine. Now it's happened again tonight.

I've been with Sky for well over a year and have not seen this particular behaviour before (I had my setup working fine after following all the hints on this forum). Even in the days before the Netgear router firmware upgrade, problems would be solved by turning the router off and on again. But I've tried that and it's made no difference.

If necessary I'll post all the details of setup and my stats, etc. But before that, is there anything going on that might be causing this, eg. DLM?

Re: Second night of snail-like speeds

It's happened again tonight, so I'll post some stats.

Except... the Mognuts utility that I used to use doesn't work any more. (I seem to recall reading that it doesn't with with the new firmware.)

So I've tried Mossywell BSR v.2, but it's giving me two horizontal green stripes, meaning it can't contact the router. I have an old white Netgear router, thought it was v. 1. Or is this indicative of something going wrong?

Here are the basic stats from the router itself:

Connection Speed: 7904 kbps, 416 kbps.
Line Attenuation: 35.0 db, 22.0 db.
Noise Margin: 7.1 db, 14.0 db.

      >are you wireless? running in your test socket?

My main desktop connects to the Netgear router via a separate Buffalo router. All connections in this path are via physical ethernet cables (shielded Cat5e).

The Buffalo router sends out a wireless signal that some other computers in the house connect to wirelessly, but none of them are switched on at the moment.

This has all worked fine for at least a year until the last few nights (usual speed has been 6.5Mbps, tonight it was 1.2Mbps).

      Broadband package is Mid.

I will try out the test socket later.

Re: Second night of snail-like speeds

Thinkbroadband speed tester has been giving some very strange results for me recently. It usually shows half the speed of Giganews or this site.

Re: Second night of snail-like speeds

Hmm, interesting. I've tried thinkbroadband again, got 1.9 Mbps. Tried speedtest.net -- got 3.7. Tried skyuser's tester (hadn't seen this one before) -- got 6.3.

Repeated tests a few times: thinkbroadband stayed around 2Mbps: speedtest varied between 3.5 and 6.5, skyuser consistent at around 6 and a half. Something funny is going on.

I had noticed web access being very slow before, though, that's what prompted me to test my speed (doesn't seems so bad now, though).

Re: Second night of snail-like speeds

Is there anyway to unthrottle your internet.

I realise your asking for info for perhaps something that may be amiss but tbh all I want is it to go away.
I'm on connect because I've been promised MAX is on it's way soon, very soon, two years later and it's still soon !!! Thankfully they compensated my financially so I only pay 5 but I play online poker and can barely stay connected during 5pm - 12pm.

      What is the fix ?

I've done this BT Openworld and it took absolutely ages to dl the "small 5mb" then my PC doesn't recognise the .me file ??
