Very Very slow download speeds
Hi,
can anyone help me? im pulling hair out on what to do.
Last sunday, i had a problem with my telephone. it would not ring in. i also noticed that the broadband was off.
called BT and they checked the line & it cam back inconclusive so escalated it for further investigation. about 20mins later, BT called me. they said it was an internal problem & to check my master sockt and try the tester part. looked at the only socket in the house & it does not have a bottom plate to remove. it undid the screws & it seems live on a circuit?. anyway, after fiddling about with the filters i was back up & running. i get a bit of crackling on the phone & i have very slow download speeds which would make the good old dial up modems look like top of the range. im doing an online check & its showing a d/l speed of 100kps.
can anyone help me speeding this up?
thanks
rich

Re: Very Very slow download speeds
chances are faulty socket...you really need to get BT to replace it, which isn't gonna be cheap...
i'm sure in Brian69 reads this he'll advise in more detail...-------------------------------------------

Re: Very Very slow download speeds
Call BT back and while you are on to them give it a good old waggle (the socket) to make the line crackel.
They will replace it for you for free.

Re: Very Very slow download speeds
As long as you don't pull the wiring about you will be fine, there is not much chance of electrocution. When you call BT do not mention ADSL on the line, just tell them you are getting intermittant noise on the line and do not have a test socket to use for testing purposes. They will warn you that an engineer can be sent out but if the fault is with your own equipment and not theirs you could face a call out charge (but if its the main socket then that won't happen anyway).

Re: Very Very slow download speeds
guys, tuns out it was skys fault. a quick phone call to the tech guys & it was sorted by the morning. it was something to do with a cancellation request on my acount???? and maintenance in my area?
ive read all the reviews about sky & how unhelpfull they are but the young girl seems very experienced & knew what she was on about.
im now getting speeds between 1.3 to 1.7 megs now.
thanks for all your help.

Re: Very Very slow download speeds
would you believe it, its gone back down to 400kbps this time.
ive spoken to sky who say the noise amrgin is too high. now they are saying its ideal & i shouldnt use web based speed checkers as they are inaccurate.
here are my stats, are they any good?
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1568 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 54.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 16.3 db 20.0 db

Re: Very Very slow download speeds
Your router is synched at around the same speed it was earlier, so if you are only pulling 400kbps it may well be the speed test. I ran one last night and got told I was pulling 4Mb when I am actually pulling 16Mb. That noise margin looks like a cap to be honest.
