    Capped sync speed?

      Capped sync speed?

      Hi,
We're on broadband max, which is supposed to be 16mb. I'm aware that that's 16mb "maximum", and there's little chance we'll actually get that, but every time our router connects it syncs at exactly 8096. This seems a bit odd to me, because we're still in the 10 day period when it's supposed to be working out the best speed, so surely if our line really couldn't go any faster than 8mb, it would at least vary a little on the sync speed each time it connects?

Also, I mentioned this to the guy who rang from Sky to check everything was up and running, and he said "I guess you live about 2.5 miles (roughly) from the exchange", but we don't, we live 0.8 miles from the exchange, I know it's not entirely down to line length, but still.

What I'm wondering is if there's any chance Sky, or BT could've screwed up and given us an 8mb connection by mistake. Or is there a chance this will potentially speed up when the 10 day period is over?

      Thanks,
      Jack

Hi there is no 10 day training period on max only on connect. Can you post some router stats ideally taken directly from the test socket with no extentions connected.

      8mb connection by mistake
That would be my guess, they seem to do this often.

you will need to call or email to get then to change your connection (to ADSL2+)

if you phone you will have to go through all the slow speed stuff by T1, you need to get to the next level which is CST as these are the ones who can make the changes (Be polite to the T1 on the phone, they have a script they have to follow and you will get no quicker to CST if rude)

or you could use the email form on the Mysky website

      Re: Capped sync speed?

Is there any way I can check if it's ADSL2+ or not? And do the numbers suggest that I should be getting a faster speed? I only ask because if I ring up and say we're on 16mb but we're only getting 8mb they'll probably just fob me off with "it all depends on your line quality blah blah blah...".

Thanks for all your help so far guys.

      Re: Capped sync speed?

your connection speed is 8096 which is skys GDMT setting, this with your upstream (768) and your healthy noise margin (15db) show that you are on GDMT.

if you phone it will make no difference is if you say some of the above or all of it, the first line support may not understand and they have to go over there script sheet (plug in to master/ re-boot router / blah / blah / blah)

it may be less stressfull to use the form on the website to contact them. you can then put your stats in the email and when it gets to the right person, they will be able to sort it for you

PS: have a read of the 3rd link in my sig

      Re: Capped sync speed?

Great, thanks. I also checked the attenuation on this checker: ::. Kitz - Max speed calculator .::, and it says we should be getting around 16mb (although that's obviously a very rough estimation). I think I'll email them.

      Re: Capped sync speed?

on ADSL2+ your attenuation will increase a couple of db, and if you have any internal wiring issues you may not get the full 16meg but still somewhere close to it

have a qick look in the cabling and faceplate forum for tips on how to improve your wiring (you may not need to but its always a good idear to have it as up to scratch as poss)

i also think you are going the right way by emailing as it will save you getting very frustrated on the phone

the eform to fill in is in the contact us part of mysky

      Re: Capped sync speed?

Well we're in a flat, and only have one phone line socket, which the router is plugged directly into (with a filter), there's no other wiring I'm aware of.

Thanks for all you help, email sent.

Great, let us know how you get on (you should get a confirmation email back, saying its passed over to the right dept, then it should be done within 5 days)
