      Sky Broadband Speed Help!!

      Hi All!

I recently switched to SKY broadband from Virgin and so far not had much luck.

I am on the 4MB package from SKY as the large package (8MB) isnt available yet due to BT doing some work on the line at present.

On my router home page it says I am recieving approx 4864 kbps, which i would expect. However, when running various Online Speed Tests (speedtest.net, thinkbroadband test), plus the one on this forum they all say my download spped is approx 700 kbps!!! This is the same either wireless or using ethernet direct into my router. SKY say that the 4Mbps is what they believe I am recieving according to their tests.

Having had 4Mbps broadband before from Virgin, I know the speed I am getting with SKY is not as fast as that and is alot lot slower then 4Mbps.

Does anyone have any ideas whats going on or how I can improve this?

      Many Thanks

      Re: Sky Broadband Speed Help!!

thanks guys. Sorry - getting confused with the speeds. Basically I wanted the £10 a month package (is this 8Mb?!) but it wasnt available due to work on the line. So they've put me on the package below this. Not sure why I'm getting 4Mb then?!

anyway, with regards to my stats I've tried Mognutís Utility thanks to your links but cannot download the netgear.cfg file after selecting Modem Stats. It says the file is not found. Is there another way of obtaining my stats?

      cheers

      Re: Sky Broadband Speed Help!!

      Thanks, that help a lot.
it does show me that you are on the Connect package which is a rebranded BT service (will mean your exchange is full / or is not LLU)

if you are in the first 10 days of your connection, you should see some fluctuation in your speeds. this is due to the BT line working out the best speed.
during the 10 day period it would be better if possible to be plugged into your BT test socket (this would cut off any extentions you may use) as this will give you the best profile

      Re: Sky Broadband Speed Help!!

      thanks Richone.

I dont seem to have a Test Socket on my BT socket. It appears to be an old BT box that was installed years ago before we moved in. Its not a split face plate and doesnt have a second socket underneath. This is the only BT socket in the house.

Any ideas what speed I should be getting with my package and why my router says 4 meg and those test say 700 k?!
