Re: Speed Dropping From Sky BB Activated

Just to follow up on my post.
I phoned sky up several times yesterday to get a good run around from sky tech support.
my first call was at 9am...
By 4pm i was asking for my mac code and to cancle.
This is not as easy as you would think.
i am within my cooling off time.
but 90% of the support people have no clue what to do when you want to cancle. They cannot send a mac code via email, so they say.. mine is comeing via text msg!
One of the guys even said i was not allowed my mac code!
Four of the tech people hung up after i waited around a hour on each call.
I will be trying to get the cost of the calls back!
Now if i dont get my mac code within the time they finaly said, i will take it ferther...
Anyhow the reason i have decided to cancle is because of my speed.
I am not going into a 12 month contract paying 20 for 2mb.
so will warn people now; if you are not in a sky network active area, check your speeds, and decide what to do quick....
I was getting 5-6 mb as i said, now if i got around the same i would of been happy, but i aint. so off i go to else where....

connect has a 10 day training period where the speed will go up and down, it is best to run from the BT test socket and reboot the router a coupe of times a day.

you will get the same problem with any ISP who is reselling a BT product, but as you say before "i have fixed pc's for comeing up 18 years so know a bit about them and how they work" so i'm sure you already know this.

Re: Speed Dropping From Sky BB Activated

i know all about the training, but as i got 7mb stright away with pipex, which settled down to between 5 and 6.5, i am shure i should of got more than 2mb, even bt said i should get more than 2mb on the training when i asked if there was a fault.
it normally starts high, pinging you out untill the line stables down.
and yes i know more about pc's and how to sort them in most case's more than the guys in the tech rooms on sky. i dont know it all ; no one does, if they tell you they do, they lieing.
i did do support for a big isp about 5 years ago.
      but not going into that.
i know all the tests there is, so not paying for something i wont get!
may as well pay joe blog isp 4 for 2mb
      wouldnt you?
i am not saying sky is no good for everyone.
but in my case the speed was the issue. would of been happyer if it started at my max then stabled down
      even if i got 3mb!
out of the 5 isp's i have been with since i came off 56k, i think sky is the only one that was slow on downloads within the 10 days.

if that was the case, aol/tiscali and pipex would of been the same when i joined them
and they was not, i allways had/have between 5-7mb b4 joining sky, even on the 10 day training, so that is not the case here.

Re: Speed Dropping From Sky BB Activated

if your speed is always 2meg after the 10 days, i would assume your profile to be set at that (by the BT exchange) it can then take 3 days to retrain to match the line conditions. if it has not there are some thing you can do at your end to fool the exchange into changing its profile but this does not always work.

Edit: just read one of previous posts and it would seem "your off" to another supplier which renders any futher comments useless

Re: Speed Dropping From Sky BB Activated

for a start mate those speed tests are not really that accurate if the router says that you are getting this:

      Modem Status Connected
      DownStream Connection Speed 5152 kbps
      UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5152 kbps 448 kbps

then thats what you are getting for your money and you pay 17 a month not 20

      Well sort of.

Connect (ADSL Max) isn't quite the same as Sky's LLU products. The router may well be syncing at 5152kbps but that will result in a BRAS profile of 4500kbps at best and BRAS profile is what matters when talking about speed.

It isn't clear whether the OP is out of the training period or not. If still training then the BRAS profile could be much lower than 4500kbps for the moment. If out of training then the BRAS profile could be "stuck" at 2000kbps (not all that uncommon).

I also have a high attenuation and have been on the the max package for 7 months. I was getting 1856 kbps downstream and 768 upstream and made a song and dance about which ended up me getting capped twice. People with high attentuations ie 60's or over are at the limit most ppl cant even get one meg which means your lucky to be getting anything over half a meg. I then did some messing about and got my router up to this, however for a month now since doing this, when i reboot which is required every now and again it will only sync at 1792 kbps tops which is strange but no matter as I always mess so i get about 2.3 mb.
