      hi brian,
i know this might sound daft but there is still a dialtone in the kitchen socket after i swapped them over. Its as if there is 2 main grey lines coming into the house. 1 in the kitchen and another in the hall.I cant se where any of the lines lead to as one in hall is fed into window sil and the other is into a boxed unit.

      Hi Neil.
No this does not sound daft at all.
You have just not found where your line comes in thats all. Is it overhead? if so then follow it from where it joins your home to where it enters. If it is underground then look for the entry point.

the one in the kichen is in a boxed unit thats plasterboarded in, cant see behind it. the one in the hall goes into the upvc window sil and there is no other trace of it outside or inside
Going back to the photos earlier:

thats the one in the kitchen, the grey wire comes from the plasterboard boxed unit. Im puzzled how i can have 2 grey main bt wires

this is the phone point in the hall. it goes into the upvc window sil and the theres no trace outside or in:

the boxes are on the opposite rooms now. i.e..main box in the hall now

      Hi Neil.
If you cannot find where the line comes in from the outside (from the pole or underground) then it's time to through in the towel and call BT. Don't panic, your wiring is far from standard and you can tell them that you cannot disconnect your internal wiring even through you have a NTE5 master. don't mention BB to them, say you want to move an extension and you cannot disconnect it.
Your line will be fitted with a new master at the incoming point. There is not much point in contacting sky untill you have got this sorted, because you cannot disconect your internal wiring and this may well be the cause of your poor speed.
Sorry you have had a runaround with this, but the root of your problem is the wiring.

No it does not matter about that Openreach still do the maintance. The pics show that the wiring has a very DIY look about it (the wire colours are wrong). but you need to get a NTE5 master on the incoming line so that you can see what speed your line will support, then you can take it from there.
