Mid Package - Can I get better results ?

Hi - I have been reading a number of threads on these forums and unfortunately still cant figure out why I am not getting better connection speeds. Any help / advice would be appreciated. My router stats are -

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4992 kbps 320 kbps
Line Attenuation 28.0 db 19.5 db
Noise Margin 19.1 db 14.0 db

      Speed test result -

Line attenuation seems to indicate that I am fairly close to the exchange but the noise margin appears beyond most other results.

do you use an extention ?

could you post some detailed stats (see second link in my sig and look for the mognuts utility)

your noise margin is very high and you may have been "auto regraded", could you also do a comparison set of stats form your "test" socket (behind face plate of master socket, see first link in my sig)

you are correct that you should see the maximum speed for mid with your attenuation (now just to find out why not)

Re: Mid Package - Can I get better results ?

      Hi Richone54,

The phone system in my house is a bit of a nightmare. I inherited one of those PBX systems when I bought the house (I think the previous owner used to run an office from here). Anyway, I got a mate to install one of those dual sockets (with a built in adsl filter) before the line goes into the PBX system. My router is then connected to the adsl socket.

I'll post some stats shortly. Thanks for your help.

Re: Mid Package - Can I get better results ?

Sorry - I realise those are probably rubbish as I rebooted my router before I started. Will repost unless this give enough information. Is auto regraded the same as being capped ?

      yes,

not sure about you telephone system ?

if you could post the sats a little later (after about 8 hours) just to check the line errors (but i would be supprised if you had any with your noise margin)

if as think you should have no errors, there are 2 ways to get your cap lifted. the first would be to use the kana form online (it's on the sky bb site somewhere), or to phone and try and get through to CST (the first people who answer will be teir 1.
teir 1 will go go over all the trouble shooting on there sheet (bit of a pain, but has to be done)you would need to try and get them put you through to CST (CST are the ones who will be able to look at your line and check errors/speed and make any changes), if you cannot get through to CST try to get your ticket number, so when/if you ring back you should not need to go over all the T1 troubleshooting again.

with T1, please be polite, it may seem silly some of the checks but they have rules which will not allow to esculate you to CST without doing.

best time to ring is around 10.30pm (by other posts on this forum)

Re: Mid Package - Can I get better results ?

      Richone54,

Impatience got the better of me and I called Sky immediately after reading your post. I was polite and Tier 1 hooked me up with Tier 3 in about 1 minute. Tier 3 told me that my connection could only handle a 5 meg connection but regardless he gave it a go to the max allowed on my package. Well it connected fine and I sat through a few of his favourite youtube videos whilst he checked the line for errors. All clean !! He then tried to ramp it up further to 16mb but it didnt connect at more than 8.4 - in conclusion he felt that was the maximum manageable by my exchange (for now) and that apart from the upstream speed increasing slightly I would not benefit from the max package.

My results / basic stats are now -

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8000 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 28.0 db 19.5 db
Noise Margin 11.3 db 14.0 db

I tried the speed test several times and the above are the lowest results I got (but not by much - all pretty consistent). The connection is a lot faster - I can tell the difference straight away.

      Thanks for you help

Re: Mid Package - Can I get better results ?

why did he try to get it to 16Mbps, you're only on Mid!!

still, looking good, altho they don't know how to add up as it should say 8096 (8192 but syncs as that)...obviously a tier 2 agent, now CST, who's being lazy...
