Line Attenuation and poor connection speeds

      Hi Everyone,

New Sky BB user, and have been on the service since the 27/12. I have been provided with the Sagem router which seems to do a fair job.

The stats show that my line attenuation is 51db (d/s) and approx. 26db (u/s) with a downstream noise margin of anywhere between 5.0 and 6.9 depending on when I check.

My typical downstream connection speed shows as around 2600 kbps (+/-200 kbps) but when I do the speed check test the most I have had was 1826 kbps, which seems rather slow when my attenuation is 51db. I would have been expecting somwhere around 4500kbps downstream.

In fact, when I first signed up for Sky BB they estimated my line would receive between 6.5 - 8 Mbps connection speed (as did all ISP sites where I did a line check prior to going with Sky).

Is there anyway that I can check which service I'm on (not sky product as I am on the Connect service) i.e. ADSL2+ or ADSL Max. Can I request Sky check my line\exchange?

I live a new house, on a new estate and I am 2.18km as the crow flies, and approx. 3.23 actual path to the exchange.

      Thanks in advance guys

Re: Line Attenuation and poor connection speeds

Update: I have also tested this in the master socket, and in the test socket under the face plate - both returned the same results. Also, my neighbour who is on the same exchane but different ISP is getting around 6Mbps connection speed.

      Thanks again guys!

Re: Line Attenuation and poor connection speeds

If you're a Connect customer then you're on ADSL Max as Connect is a rebadged BT product.

Your attenuation should give you a router sync speed of ~5250kbps. If you're not seeing that then look to line noise being the culprit.

1826kbps download speed is not far off what you'd expect for a 2600kbps sync wired. Wireless, up to that but could be a lot less.

Thanks for the quick response, it seems noise may be to blame so I'll have to look into it. When you say wired and wireless connections, do you mean from the socket to the router, or router to PC?

      Thanks

Thought so, sorry for asking the obvious. Just wasn't sure how this was affect downstream connection speeds.

Re: Line Attenuation and poor connection speeds

Connect the router to the main socket (or test socket if available) give it a while to settle and then post your proper stats and we will see what is going on.
All speed tests should be run on ethernet to get a true representation as speed can be lost across wireless sometimes, your router may be connected at a decent speed but only transmitting data wirelessly at a lower rate.

Thanks PaulSky - I'll plug the router into the test socket when I get home, and connect the lappy via the cable and then post the stats this evening. Thanks for your help!

Re: Line Attenuation and poor connection speeds

Well it saves you calling up if we can look at it here lol If your stats are good and the speed is back to normal on ethernet then remove the ethernet cable and try wireless on the same test, if the speed drops then it's the wireless and may just be down to interference.
