if the phone does not work at all, when only the phone plugged in (no routers/sky box other phones) it will be a line problem. do you have a corded phone to test with ?

if there is still no joy i think you will need to phone BT

(as to the test socket, not every house has one, you will however have a master socket which will be the first socket you come to after the BT line enters your house. the line may enter your house at the front door from a pole on the street / to your loft from a pole on the street or if you live in a newer house it may come up from the ground at the front of your house again near the door,)

if your phone line does not work it may not be worth looking at the BB for now as there may be some sort of problem at the exchange ?

      Rich,

I have rung BT and there is a fault on the line. An engineer is going to be looking into the problem tomorrow. They have assured me that it is nothing to do with switching over to Sky. The fault is meant to be underground.

Could the lightening and thunder last night have caused this?

Thanks for the help and advice and I willlet you know the outcome.

      Cheers

Thats good news - hopefully when they sort it you should see reasonable sync speed

Possibly - but more likely the underground line has degraded over time due to water ingress, bb places a lot more demands on the cable than voice calls.

See if you can get the bt engineer to fit the latest master socket while they are there - a brew with a tenner under it should do the trick - if a few discrete hints dont work first

ps:- when youre sorted try connecting to the router via an ethernet cable if practicable - its much more reliable than wireless - tho wireless has no bearing on the routers connection to the exchange - ie your present problem

Most BT engineers will replace the old style socket with a new one if they see it needs doing as it saves them work in the future and it saves BT having to send engineers out when a test socket isn't available for troubleshooting.

      Hi all,

Just to keep you up dated. The Gas Board were doing some work across the road and have knackered the phone lines for 13 houses!!!!

Expected repair date 21/01/2008 - nice to see BT are on the ball

I am currently trying to find out how I claim compensation from BT for the lack of a phone line. I have also emailed them asking if an engineer can replace my faceplate free of charge

Once back working to full capacity we can then hopefully sort my stats out

Re: New to Sky BB - Good D/L Now halved

Okay all BT have repaired the line but wouldn't change my faceplate - tight or what!!!

Anyway here are my stats: -

      System Up Time: 69:00:53

Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
      WAN PPPoA 162242 242328 0 11496 617809 6:29:31
      LAN 51 0 0 0 0 69:00:53
      WLAN 1065809 647119 0 631879 15120 69:00:32
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 5440 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 33.0 db 19.0 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 14.0 db

As I have said before I am on MAX - how can I improve my d/l speeds?

      Cheers

      Mis
