      Low connection speeds, disconnections.

Hello everyone, I have tried all the tips given on the site to improve my connection speed and all but it seems to not be helping at all. When I finally get my router to connect at a decent speed I normally see around 3500KB/s and I have seen a max of ~4900KB/s I have just been happily surfing away when my connection dropped about 5-10 mins ago and I go 500KB/s. After restarting a few times I have now got 960KB/s which is just not good enough compared to the normal speeds I get.

This happens very often for me but I am not sure if there is a pattern in the times it happens. I would like to know first if Sky cap connections at certain times of the day or if at all? and then would like to know if there is anything I can do to sort this problem out.

Even if I get a decent connection speed I still find that loading times are slow. I have also noticed that the router can spend a good 5 minutes trying to connect with the internet status light flashing orange then just stopping and this seems to be helped if I ring a number from the phone in the same socket as the modem, this seems very weird to me and while on the phone I can hear a high pitch squeel of the router connecting, just my young ears?

you've been severely capped by Sky - call them and they'll remove it...

      Re: Low connection speeds, disconnections.

Any idea why this would be? I seem to get perfectly fine speeds if I leave it a few hours and reboot the router then so could they be capping me at certain times of the day?

      Re: Low connection speeds, disconnections.

the cap is permanent - have you called before complaining about speed? if so, the auto regrade probably got you...

what's you current setup? are you running off an extention? bare in mind best setup is master socket>filter>sky supplied dsl cable>router>ethernet to pc

any variance from this will have affects on connection...

Yes you'd think so looking at the downstream noise margin but the router reported max rate is little higher than the actual - normally there would be a massive difference.

I wonder if there's something else going on?

      Re: Low connection speeds, disconnections.

Never called complaining about speed, I have had to get the router replaced twice due to failure of the first two we had, I just rebooted the router and I am getting 4096KB/s now.

Any ideas why this could happen? Could internal wiring also have an effect on our speed?

      Re: Low connection speeds, disconnections.

Ah - there you go. It's not a capping issue.

I suspect you have a particularly bad wiring problem which is kicking in and out i.e. you'll get different syncs each time you reboot. That explains why the max rate didn't look right for a capped line.

See the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line issues. Start with a test socket comparison.

      Re: Low connection speeds, disconnections.

^ was thinking about the max rate - obviously some noise on the line somewhere...

      Re: Low connection speeds, disconnections.

Is there anything I can do to stop this or atleast make the situation a little better? I was thinking about renovating the internal wiring as the test socket gives me 5500KB/s - 6000KB/s and that would be great to have, although I am unsure if it will help with the stability of the line.

      Re: Low connection speeds, disconnections.

From reading through your earlier posts it seems clear you have a line problem. Your comment about being able to hear the router when on the phone could be a filter problem (faulty or incorrectly fitted).

As I said before, all the info you need is in the cabling and faceplate help forum.
