Just got Sky Broadband. Seems slow. Low Noise Margin a problem?
Hi
Just got Sky broadband MAX after being on Pipex for about a year.
So far it all seems to work fine, apart from a strange problem where my main PC couldn't connect to the router, but a change of network card has fixed this.
Although everything works, I am rather dissopointed with the speed. It seems to be getting slower and slower! I started out getting around 6Mbps on the speed test. It then seems to have gone down to around 3Mbps, and a recent test shows between 1 and 2Mbps.
Reading around the forum has so far lead me to using the TCP optimiser, which didn't have any noticeable effect. I have also been looking at the stats on my connection, and I noticed that the noise margin seems to be low, which I think is a bad thing? It is usally 2 db or 4 db, but I have seen it go as low as 1db.
Current stats from router are
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 7616 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 44 db 12 db
Noise Margin 2 db 12 db
So, anyway. Should I be getting faster results? Where should I start with trying to speed things up?
Edit - I was just watching my noise margin and it went to 2147483646 db! I'm guessing this isn't an accurate number though, and it actually probably went lower than 0. A speed test around this time is showing speeds around 1Mbps.Last edited by mintfresh; 25-11-07 at 06:29 PM. Reason: Added extra info

Re: Just got Sky Broadband. Seems slow. Low Noise Margin a problem?
I used to be on Tesco Broadband.
Sky is much faster and I'm only on the mid package.
Took hours to get email set-up. Indian call centre didn't have any info on Microsoft Outlook (which I use) and could only tell me what to do with Microsoft Outlook Express!! Apparently I was even told they only have manuals to read from which are out of date.
I've been a Sky Broadband customer for less than a week and the customer service is sh*t.
So glad I found this site as I've had help no end from the good folks here.

MINTFRESH, post us your stats from the test socket, (behind the master socket) if you have one. Your snr is very low at the moment
