      Sky Max

      Hi,

as a sky max user am I automatically put onto ADSL 2? I'm about 2km from my exchange so I wouldn't of though I had a problem but the max speed I seem to be getting is 6MB, nowhere near the 16MB advertised!

      Thanks,

      James

      Re: Sky Max

your line lenth may be to long or you may have problems with your internal wiring, could you post your detailed stats which will give a better indication
      (see links in my sig)

also just to check are you wired or wireless ?

      Re: Sky Max

Is that 2Km as the crow flies or have you measured the distance by road to the exchange as many cables follow the roads etc.
Also how are you connected? Is it via your main socket or an extension? Is this speed seen via ethernet or via wireless?

      Re: Sky Max

      Hi,

I've taken a look at my stats and it appears I am approx 2.5km, but should be able to get 14500kbps. See below:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 8032 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 35.0 db 24.0 db
Noise Margin 7.6 db 14.0 db

Could it be the noise margin? If not is there anyway to force it to connect faster?

      Thanks,

      James

      Re: Sky Max

      Hi James,

your attenuation does suggest max speed of 14.5 but this would be in perfect conditions, could you post a set of detailed stats (use mognuts utility in first link on my sig), then if possible could you move roter to *master socket and do a test from the BT test socket (behind faceplate of master socket) and post another set of stats from there

(* assuming you have an NTE5 socket)

      Re: Sky Max

      Hi,

the detailed router stats are below. I can't try the router in the main socket until later tonight as it involves kicking my wife out of the lounge and moving the telly! which wouldn't go down well as she is catching up on east enders !

      Thanks,

      James

      Re: Sky Max

not sure what you got there ?
      did you follow these :

      Mognut’s Utility
Go to the utility web site: Sky Netgear DG834GT utility version 0.4.
Click the “Get” detailed modem stats button and click “OK”.
Enter the router login user name and password.
At the next screen, click the back button on your browser.
      Click the “Download” netgear.cfg button.
What you do next depends on your operating system. On Windows XP, click the “Save” button to save the file to your hard disk. (If you click “Open”, you may find that the file association is one that doesn’t handle carriage returns the same way as the router, hence the reason for saying “Save”.)
Open the file in WordPad (not notepad).

      could you have another go

      Re: Sky Max

at the moment you are Gdmt which will give you max of 8meg, but your routers max sync is not alot higher

your stats do not look that bad (for the short time) it may be your internal wiring which is causing the router to sync at such low speeds (i may be out of my depth here)
sky will have put you on gdmt to give you a more reliable service, once you have tried the test socket have a look at the amx rate figure to see if it has improved (if you do a power off reboot of the router now, you may also see a diff rate)
