Help Sky Broadband Max 16Mb slow connection

Hi all, sorry if this is posted in the wrong place am a n00b. I have sky broadband max 16Mb. On looking at my routers status page, downstream is always below 10000kbps. I have 1 extension going to upstairs of the house and that's it, router plugged into master socket. Even with the router plugged into the test socket, I rarely get up to 10500kbps. The phone line is a brand new one from the post outside and a brand new BT Master socket. Here are my routers Stats. Looking forward to any possible solutions as Sky's so called Tech Support is atrocious. Btw am waiting on Tier3 support to get back to me. Thanks in anticipation.

Yes, you have Sky Max which offers a connection speed of up to 16meg. The actual connection speed is dependent on line length and line quality.

Your line length (attenuation) limits your connection speed to ~12500kbps. You're getting 9960kbps and the shortfall is almost certainly down to a bit of line noise (line quality).

Have a look at the cabling and faceplate help forum for info and advice - you may be able to improve things to 12500kbps. You certainly won't get 16000kbps.

I have to say, calling Sky has wasted your (and their) time. There's nothing they can do to improve your speeds. They are providing you with a decent, fast connection.

Also, it looks like you've changed router firmware?

Re: Help Sky Broadband Max 16Mb slow connection

Thanks for the quick reply, appreciated. Will look into the faceplate and cableing.
As far as decent fast connection goes, I was assured I WOULD be able to receive 16Mb not UP TO. If I had known this at the time I would have stuck with my previous isp on 20Meg.
Thanks once again for your help.

Re: Help Sky Broadband Max 16Mb slow connection

Just wanted to ask another n00b question? You say dependant on line length? Telegraph post is on the other side of the street, from there to cable coming into the house is near on 12 metres, also exchange is 1.86Km from where I live. Do I have to live in the exchange to get 16Mb??

line lenth is is between you and exchange,
i am not sure but if you check some of the sites that give you an indication of you speed you may get they all seem to say "between". without the line up noone would be able to say you would get a specific speed (apart from virgin as they are cable)

did you try your test socket ?

Re: Help Sky Broadband Max 16Mb slow connection

the further you are, the slower the speed. people pretty much less than 1KM away (total length) will get pretty much the full 16MB, over 1KM 8-16 (depending on line quality) and over 4KM 512KB-8MB.....

very rough guidelines but if u were guaranteed 16MB then they shouldn't have done that - they run a theoretical speed test at POS which should've been told to you so you can decide which package to go to...

Re: Help Sky Broadband Max 16Mb slow connection

Thanks for the feedback, does that mean I can cancel my contract as I was misled and misold Broadband max, lowered into a false sense of security by the sales staff who assured me I would definately get 16Meg. Hehe, just goes to show the tactics they all use lol. Never mind, I guess I'll have to settle for the 8.5-11.5 I'm getting atm. Thanks again for the help.

Re: Help Sky Broadband Max 16Mb slow connection

All there web advertisments and anything on paper says "UP to 16mb" dont forget there sales staff are probably on commision so no wonder thers a few white lies. I bet its alot cheaper than cable though! I was looking at some flyer that came through my door the other day for for Virgin 20mb broadband, 35 a month!! bugger that. Think I'll stick with me 8mb for 5.

Re: Help Sky Broadband Max 16Mb slow connection

Maybe the Virgin 20 Meg was more expensive, but at least I was getting a decent download speed so I did'nt mind the extra cost. Stats now after initial post no higher than 8862kbps Downstream and a near on constant 538kbps Upstream, that is using the test socket aswell. So after getting in touch with sky, downstream and upstream have dropped lmao. Guess they don't like me huh?

Re: Help Sky Broadband Max 16Mb slow connection

Update on all of the above. After countless calls to sky, and regrades of my line, router downstream is now 8096 for the last month CAPPED. This is after receiveng the new Sagem router. Have just been in touch with Sky again this morning (using a freephone telephone number to get through directly to Tier 3, i.e. someone who can actually comprehend the English language. Low and behold downstream is now nearly 12000.
The UP TO 16MB connection advertised by isp's if it be 8MB 16MB etc is farsical and should be banned. THE CONSUMER SHOULD KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THEY CAN AND CAN'T GET.
I think it is diabolical that people are getting ripped off left right and center by these isp's and I must comment, SKY is one of the worst I have come across so far. Virgin Media may have been more expensive but whenever I did a speedtest I was not getting 8012 down.
Absolutely disgusting, and before any remarks, yes the choice is mine and yes I am changing my isp. Just thought I would post this so other people thinking of using SKY broadband can be weary and make their own minds up. Personally.........I WOULD ADVISE AGAINST.
