**run a speedtest and post your results here**

This is a discussion on **run a speedtest and post your results here** within the Speed tests and how to get better results forums, part of the Sky Broadband help and support category; I wonder if there is anybody in SKYUSER that gets just about 16MB...

You are syncing at 15323kbps which is the standard maximum for Sky Max. There are a number of users who are syncing a little over 16000kbps either through "luck" or more often because they've had cause to be in contact with T3 and the agent has lifted their cap (if you hadn't realised all customers are capped - that's what determines the package).

You're getting 13199kbps in a speedtest. The internet protocol (TCP/IP) carries a significant transmission overhead ( approaching ~20%) so that's why you're not getting 15323kbps download speed.

In common with all ISPs, Sky quotes the speed as the sync speed (download speed wouldn't make sense as they can't control the speed of the servers customers use) and "up to" because ADSL is a line length/quality dependant technology.

13meg downloads (and no noticeable contention or traffic shaping), plus to all intents and purposes unlimited downloads (no-one so far has hit the fair usage policy) for 10/month seems a pretty good deal to me. Do you know a better one?

      Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6048 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 28.5 db
Noise Margin 5.6 db 14.0 db

Do get up to 5200 download on test. Much better than plusnet stats and actual download speeds much better. NM is low in the evening, goes up to 9 in the day but dont seem to have frequent disconnections yet

Happy after 3 weeks with sky!

Very good sync for your attenuation. Very good speedtest for your sync.

How low is low on your noise margin? Try and ensure it stays above 6db to avoid problems. If you reboot once during the evening when it's low then that will probably do the trick. Although your sync will drop a little I expect you'll find very little impact on your speedtest result.

BTW your profile says "thinking of getting Max" - it looks like you've decided and taken the leap then?

      Thanks Saturday!

Here are tonight's stats at 9pm:

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 6048 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 47.0 db 28.5 db
Noise Margin 4.8 db 14.0 db

As you can see the NM is very low - but the router/sky seem to be coping with it and not disconnecting constantly or anything!

I have thought about using the web too to set the MN at 7 - is it worth doing do u think?

Off to change my profile - yes we did take the plunge and very glad to be away from plusnets monthly 'you have exceeded the fair usage policy' crap

      Best wishes

      Dave

At 4.8db you have to be getting line errors. Luckily, you're not seeing any problems from this so there's no particular need to address it.

What you may well find though is that those line errors will be causing your router to request data to be resent and this will be having a detrimental impact on your download speeds. As I said before, boosting your noise margin will decrease your sync speed but probably not impact your download speed. But if you have a stable connection and you're happy with it then don't mess around and leave it alone.

Thanks for the advice, think I'll leave all alone until it breaks LOL
