That's a good result then, as long as it's better than I got from BT then I'm happy with that
      Thanks for the info
Still unsure about getting SKY+HD or just upgrade the HDD in my SKY+ Box

Surely if you found this thread you must have noticed a little more info is needed?

Your router stats, whether you're wired or wireless and how you measured your speed would be a good start.

Re: **run a speedtest and post your results here**

      Hi

I'm new to the forum and it's my 1st post. I want to check whether I'm getting a good speed or not. I'm on Sky Max and getting nowhere near the max.

I've had a brand new BT Master socket installed about 3 weeks ago. I had it moved closer to the PC in order to eliminate the dodgy extensions I've connected up over the years, which I thought were slowing my connection. So now I have a new Master socket, no extensions connected to it and my tests whilst plugged in to the main faceplate socket and the test socket are pretty much the same. These speeds are marginally better than when connected to my old master socket. Here are my figures. Do these stats sound right or should I be getting more? I'm thinking I should be getting more after reading some of the other posts. Any help would be appreciated.

Connection Speed 3136 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 29.5 db
Noise Margin 9.3 db 13.0 db

Re: **run a speedtest and post your results here**

Your sync is low for your attenuation. Part of the cause may be that your noise margin could suggest your connection is capped, though it may just be a bit high due to normal noise margin swings. However, that wouldn't account for all the shortfall. That's down to noise on your line. Without that noise you'd expect to sync at ~7500kbps.

If your new master has been professionally and properly fitted and you're getting the same sync/noise margin in your test socket then the noise is probably in your BT line.

Your throughput (download speed) is a little low for your sync. This could be down to several things: poor speedtester, using wireless or incorrect TCP/IP settings (if you're XP) being the most likely. The shortfall is small in absolute terms (<500kbps) but large as a percentage of your throughput.

Thanks for the quick response Saturday!

Darn! I did the test on a wireless laptop without thinking. I know that's not the right way to do a test. Anyway I have run it again on my main wired PC. Last week I run the TCPOptimizer application.

The new master socket was installed by BT, which as you probably know, cost me a packet. I'm currently thinking this was money down the drain!

      New test results below.

Re: **run a speedtest and post your results here**

The speedtest result looks good now i.e. good speed for your sync.

I don't suppose the cost of moving the master was completely wasted but it wouldn't appear to have made a great contribution to increasing your sync.

To be sure, run a comparison between your master socket and the test socket, using just a filter and the supplied router cable with nothing else connected other than the router.

I'm interested to see whether that high(ish) noise margin is indicating a capped line. If it is then the sync will stay the same. However, a rise in noise margin would be good - doubtful though as your wiring is clear of extensions etc.

If you do happen to be capped, being uncapped and dropping down to 6.9db would give you the best part of an extra meg. Every little helps.

      Hi Saturday

I have unplugged everything from the router bar the PC. I had to move the router a little nearer the BT socket in order to use the original RJ11 cable supplied by Sky. I've been using a 3m length cable. I ran the 2 tests again as you suggested. There seems to be a little improvement. Do you think this is a capped line?

Here are my results from test socket.
Connection Speed 3648 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 29.5 db
Noise Margin 7.4 db 13.0 db

Here are my results from the faceplate socket.
Connection Speed 3648 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 46.0 db 29.5 db
Noise Margin 7.9 db 13.0 db

      regards

The router will normally sync at 6.9db initially. If those readings were immediately after a reboot then yes it looks like your connection could be very lightly capped (the exact same sync supports this).

However, the difference between a sync at 7.9db and 6.9db is minimal so personally I wouldn't bother trying to deal with it.

Unfortunately it looks like you have a noisy BT line so unless this impacts your voice calls, you're stuffed.

The only other thing I can think of is that as you paid them to move the master and it was obviously for an ADSL connection, you could complain that you're not happy with the results. Just out of interest, I'm assuming the BT engineer ran a new connection from the outside BT box to your new master rather than just running a new piece of line from your old master?

Yep, he T'd off the outside box rather than connecting from the old master socket.

Thanks for your help and advise. I'll give BT a call, and probably Sky, to see what I can get done about it.

      regards
