      they read stuff that bt provide thm and what database they use to tell u what speeds u can and what u cant get im told i can only get 4 mbit lol what a whole load of crock im on an attenuation of 31 and i get the full 16mbit and i have to explain to them all the time that my line is capable of the higher speeds and they tell me i should be happy with what i get loool
      grrrrrrrrr drives u mad the bt rambo system or whatever it is, adsl and adsl2 and adsl2+ speeds will always be different from what the rambus system says and its only a guide

      @Hammy

      Excellent connection but your wireless connection is letting you down.

      Your stats clearly show that you can (and are) getting more than 4meg. Your stats also show that your line length (attenuation is essentially a measure of line length) is ~2.1km. That attenuation and your noise margin show that your line is capable of syncing at significantly more than your current 8meg.
      Hi Saturday,

      I just wanted to say thank you for all of your replies!

      You mentioned that there are some CST team members that post on this site, I don't suppose you know any of their user names do you? (perhaps I could send them a PM to ask if they have any suggestions).

      I have to admit, I've been shocked by the lack of support I've received from sky over the phone, and being put on hold for 56 minutes and then getting cut off was the icing on the cake.

      Please correct me if I'm wrong, but if they can reduce my connection speed from 8096kbps down to 6880kbps and then put it back up to 8096kbps so quickly, then surely it must be possible to at least try a higher connection speed? And if things didn't work out then they could just put me back to 8096kbps, right?

      I just don't understand why they aren't willing to try, and why they aren't taking any notice of my stats!? They just seem to rely on "the fact" that my BT line is only supposed to handle 4meg even though my stats tell a different story.

      I also don't understand why they are exaggerating the distance of my exchange as it REALLY is under 2km away, and yet they say its more than 3.

      Anyway, perhaps I'll try the email/kana system as I'm not sure if I can handle another round over the phone just yet. I'll show them my stats, distance to exchange etc...and hope that someone will try to help.

      Thanks again for all your advice, and have a great weekend

      Yes, absolutely correct.

      I'm afraid that rather too many of Sky's T1 agents are incapable (or unwilling) to learn anything beyond the basic training that Sky have given them. It's a question of "the computer says" i.e. the tools they have available aren't infallible or particularly accurate and rather than use common sense or a little bit of knowledge to interpret the results they just treat it as gospel. BTW don't get fixated on distance to exchange as it's line length (attenuation) which matters. Your attenuation should easily support the higher speeds you hope for, though to get the full speed possible you may need to improve your wiring/filtering.

      I don't feel I can give you the names of the CST agents on the forum or encourage you to PM them - sorry. If you look through the forum you'll soon pick up who some of them are from clues they give. Alternatively you could start a new thread asking for CST help in the title and explaining the problems you've had in the body. In many ways that would be better than continuing in this thread which is about speedtest results.

      @Saturday

      I totally understand about the names of the CST agents, so no problem!

      I agree that I've probably taken up too much space in this thread asking questions too, so I do appologise to all The idea of starting a new thread sounds like a good plan, thanks!

      I really appreciate all your advice, and I'm really glad that I found this site (at least some people are willing to listen...unlike sky it would seem)

      How should I go about and improve this? I have changed channels to one that isn't occupied by other routers around me.

      • Ensure the router is up off the ground and away from large metallic objects, DECT phones, microwaves and various other electrical items that emit rf e.g. TVs, monitors and some printers
      • Experiment with router orientation and/or aerial position if it has an external aerial
      • Choose the highest channel available that isn't in use in nearby networks
      • When comparing speeds, use a reliable speedtest server such as Skyuser's

      If all else fails, go wired. Ethernet is cheapest, powerline adaptors are neatest.

      just been uncapped again following being capped at just under 2mb grrr

      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
      Connection Speed 5120 kbps 416 kbps
      Line Attenuation 49 db 13.5 db
      Noise Margin 6 db 13 db

      I was connecting fine at aroudn 6mb to 6.5mb preDLM sky seem unable to get me back to this. Whenever I request uncapping I get reduced to sub 2mb and a decreased upload speed
