I'm not a Sky user. I hope to be soon.

I'm on the AOL Silver up to 2megs ADSL service.

As I understand LLU could show improvement.

I know this is cheeky but what should I expect with these stats:

      ADSL Link Down / Up
      Sync: 578 / 288
      Line Att: 14 db - 3 db.
      Noise: 31 db - 31 db.

I'm curious cos everyone else here gets lower noise and sometimes much higher Line Attenuation.

does this mean good things for me...if i'm correct?
Plus is it usual for Noise Margin to be the same down and up like this.

I know this part of the forum is for Sky users.
But if you could help me i'd be real grateful. As it would help me get rid of AOL and move to Mid or Max Sky product!

      8 mb mid package
Connection Speed 8096 kbps 384 kbps
      Line Attenuation downstream 24.0 db
      Line Attenuation Upstream 13.5 db
      Noise Margin downstream 14.6 db
      Noisemargin Upstream 13.0 db

I'm hoping someone can tell me their opinion of this speed, router is plugged directly into the engineers test socket on the master phone plug, it was fitted on last year. I was getting around 6.9 mbit before on Pipex just before migrating to Sky, perhaps it might get better (will it?) cos I was only connected to Sky broadband last night

You are syncing at the maximum for Sky Mid. Your speedtest is a little low for your sync (you should be seeing ~6500kbps after overheads).

There are many reasons for slow downloads in relation to sync. They have been covered ad nauseam in this thread. If you can't manage to read through it then the two main ones are a poor wireless signal (if you're wireless) and/or an overloaded test server. I'm betting on the former.

It's a wireless router but I'm using just the one computer (can't afford a 2nd one ) and it's wired to the router. I'll have a read through the whole of the thread. Do you think it might improve after a few days, I've heard there can sometimes be a sort of settling in period of approx 10 days for new broadband connections. My line is capable of up to 20mbit if I had chosen higher download speeds according to some isp's that I've discovered from some online line checkers that I've tried before settling for sky.

Not on Sky Mid, Base or Max - only Connect.

      To repeat post #54:

Most likely reasons for slow downloads (compared to sync) in rough order of likelihood:

      • a poor wireless connection (not if you're wired)
      • an overloaded test server (try Skyuser's)
      • incorrect TCP/IP settings (see second sticky in my signature)
      • severe line errors (need to see detailed stats and that's only possible with the V1 router)
      • other traffic on the PC/LAN at the time of testing (that includes malware, P2P such as Sky anytime, BBCi etc).

      4482m from the exchange.

      28 per month.

Today's the day I am supposed to go live on Sky BB.

What AM I going to do with all the money I'll save?

      RTB.
