Your sync speed is poor for your attenuation.
Your speedtests are poor for your sync.

To fix the first see the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line problems. If/when you sort this out expect a sync approaching 8000kbps.

For the second, your wireless connection is probably the problem. Try a wired connection for comparison. Also, the speedtest servers you tried may be overloaded - try Skyuser's. Lastly, consider running TCPOptimizer covered in the second sticky in my signature.

Connection Speed 4736 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 44.0 db 29.0 db
Noise Margin 6.5 db 13.0 db

Hi Saturday have hard wired the router as suggested and re ran the tests as seen above. The Sky users broadband test site suggested speeds of 4000kps+ and the other sites I used before suggest speeds of between 2.8-3.9 MB.

I'll review the "cabling & faceplate" forum this week as you have recommended but in the meantime is the drop off between wireless and hard wired normal or is there something I can do about this - or is that the TCPOptimizer you mentioned?

      Many thanks again

Is it? What do you think Max is?

Why not read a post or two before posting? Max offers a potential capacity/bandwidth and is entirely dependent on factors such as line length, line quality, PC settings and method of router/PC connection.

Some people get satisfactory performance from wireless, some don't. It depends on your local conditions. You may get some improvement experimenting with wireless channel changes or repositioning the router.

No, TCPOptimizer affects the TCP/IP settings on the computer so is not wireless specific.

      @Falconite

Looks to me as though you're on Connect not Base as your Skyuser profile and post says.

Please reboot your router and post your stats again. The 15.5db attenuation is a known router bug and isn't your true attenuation.

Thanks for that reply Saturday, I have read ALL the posts in this thread, not just one or two. I have also downloaded, installed and used the tcp optimiser programme so my download speed is better than it was before.

I am well aware that max offers 'potential' capacity/bandwidth and is dependent on all the rest that goes with it, I was merely stating my feelings on my connection speeds, which is far from good

I still feel that my download speed is rubbish - especially when waiting for pages or pictures to download. It gets more than frustrating.

A bit reminiscent of dial up from where I am sitting.

I just thought this seemed a friendly, very knowledgeable and helpful forum and was hoping for some constructive advice on what may be wrong with my set up and how to speed up my connection

Hey Moldirox. Welcome to the SkyUser forum.

If you make a thread in the "Speed tests and how to get better results" part of the forum then I am sure people will be more than happy to assist you in increasing your speed, I will probably drop in and have a look too

As Saturday mentioned, there are many factors that affect your speed, but most certainly a speed as poor as that will be able to be improved somewhat.

Be sure to post your stats so that people can assist you. You can get these by typing "192.168.0.1" into your internet browser, (username: admin password:sky) Then click the show statistics button and copy and paste all of that information into the new thread.

      Hope this helps!

      Chris.
