Should I be getting better speeds?

      Max connection since 17th August
      Distance from Exchange:550m.
Previously with Newnet consistently getting 6Mbps from an 8Mbps connection. I would therefore expect to get around 12Mbps speeds from my Sky connection, but am getting between 9.5 and 10.5. I know it's not much, but I'd like to get the maximum speed I can.

Router is plugged directly into main BT socket.

Re: Should I be getting better speeds?

A low throughput in relation to the router sync speed can be down to a number of possibilities. Top of the list would be that you are using wireless and have a poor signal. Run a speedtest here wired. If still slow (i.e <11.5meg) see the second sticky in my signature.

Your router stats cover too short a period and too little traffic to comment on whether line errors are contributing to this problem.

Re: Should I be getting better speeds?

I get 13,789 on that site

Previous tests have been with DSL ZoneUK - Speed test and Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test
where the max speed I've seen is 10,480

Re: Should I be getting better speeds?

just tried Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed again, but this time wired (sorry missed that bit by reading too fast!)

      1st run: 18,179kbps (!)
      2nd run : 10,400kbps

I've done the tcputil part earlier today - thanks for that Saturday. It did all the optimisation bits and recommended that I leave my MTU at 1500.

I'll wait until tomorrow and post updated stats.

Re: Should I be getting better speeds?

You have some errors but that's inevitable on an ADSL2+ connection running at 14500kbps. Nothing to worry about there

There's some odd results coming out of the Namesco site recently such as higher throughput than sync which is clearly impossible. Not sure what's happening there as it has always been very reliable up to now. There are several others you can try such as this one but I think your connection seems fine so don't get too hung up on the speed.

Re: Should I be getting better speeds?

I'm getting constant 21Mb speeds from Namesco, and 18Mb from Speedtest.net.

      I'm syncing at 16mb.

Re: Should I be getting better speeds?

Odd - so it looks like both Namesco and Speedtest.net are returning spurious results

I wonder if it's some local Javascript or cache issue?

Re: Should I be getting better speeds?

thanks for the replies - really appreciate you taking the time to help out.
Just one more question.... shouldn't I be syncing at 16000kbps? my 8Mb connection synced at full speed so I kind of expected Sky to do the same.

      cheers
