Your Attn is quite high - hence the 4-5 Mbps

Also a lot of errors, and lowish snr, which would indicate noise on the line. Have you tried doing a line check (if you are on a BT line)by disconnecting everything then plug in a phone into the master socket and dialing 17070 and option 2 (line test). If you hear silence then the line between the exchange and the termination part of the master is noise free, but if you get noise report to BT.

Check micro filters, I have gone through a few dodgy ones before finding a worker...or try the adslnation master socket, have heard they are damn good.

This will solve the errors and snr but not the Attn as this is a factor of distance of copper from the exchange to your house, the only way to resolve that is move closer

I'm sure the adviser would have told you what your expected speed would be and Sky do tend to quote on the low side, so I can only guess you chose Max for the better upload speed and unlimited download speed.

Unless you moved to a cable provider, you're never going to get any faster with (current) ADSL technology no matter which ISP you go to.

You could try the master socket (see my sig) to see if you can get anymore out of it, but 6mb (stable connection) would be the best you could hope for.

Re: Just joined sky and my connection sucks HELP! please

Since people are worried about the outcome of fitting/wiring up there own master sockets, could I just mention that the 17070 number is a BT telephone engineers number and authorisation to use it is questionable.

I personally wouldn't be worried about using this number, but there again i wouldn't be worried about fitting my own NTE's either.

Re: Just joined sky and my connection sucks HELP! please

cheers for the help so far guys,

Right my next problem is that my new property is one of these mill conversions that is now 40 odd apartments. I am struggling to figure out where my master socket is!

I only have 3 phone connections, 2 with normal face plates and another behind the tv that has all the sky/radio/tv aerial connections on it.

I tried the 17070 test and the line is fine not a whisper

Solid advice! I have 'enjoyed' a connection speed of 480kb/s (no, that's not a typo!) whereas my router thinks it has negotiated a connection at 7.6Mb/s. Finally tracked this down to the line filter between my router and the BT socket! Replaced that and I'm now getting 7Mb/s!

BTW: Any feel for what connection speed I should expect? My router reports a downstream connection speed of 8096 kbps, an attenuation of 27 dB and a noise margin of 10.8dB? I live ~1.7 km from the exchange.

      I just posted:

"Solid advice! I have 'enjoyed' a connection speed of 480kb/s (no, that's not a typo!) whereas my router thinks it has negotiated a connection at 7.6Mb/s. Finally tracked this down to the line filter between my router and the BT socket! Replaced that and I'm now getting 7Mb/s!"

Aaaagh! I take it all back! The real culprit is the VPN connection to my workplace. (Obviously when I changed the line filter, that dropped the VPN connection.) Connecting directly without VPN I see 7Mb/s. With VPN I get 480kb/s. Need to see the IT admin people at work...

(Of course, it still may be worth trying new line filters...)

Still curious if anyone has any view on what bit rate I should be seeing for the previous stats, though.

Norm, start a new thread and post your full router stats (using mognuts util in my sig) and also a speed test (without vpn).
