Slow Speeds (First post) Help
Hi all
I got sky max package 2 months ago and have had nothing but trouble!
I have read through Sat's very interesting posts but being a bit of a newb simpleton have not understood exactly about the signif between line attenuation
and speeds etc and am in desperate need of some advice
If the connection stayed at the top end I would not have a problem but on a daily basis i check the stats and find the dl speeds drop to 700kbps or even lower. I then have to restart the router many times in order to get the connected speed back to something good.
This can't be correct, poss Capped? noise margin seem low?
I am on the verge of changing IPS even though i will still have to pay as this is the worst service i have ever had!
I am 2.48 kilometres from my exchange (as the crow flies)
My stats look like this
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 4288 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 47 db 15 db
Noise Margin 3 db 9 db
Hope this is enough info for you

Speed Advice
Hi,
I have read Sat's post of connection speed and line attenuation but being a newb not quite understood it fully
Could someone let me know if these details look right and if they think i could increase my speed?
thanks

Re: Slow Speeds (First post) Help
Yes. Anything under 6db downstream is going to give a sluggish response and under 5db you're close to a disconnection. 3db is terrible.
It is entirely normal for the noise margin to change through the day, repeating the same cycle day after day. You need to "lock" your router's noise margin at a high enough figure so that when the noise margin drops it doesn't go below about 7db. The first sticky in my signature has details of two methods to do this. The Mognuts method is easiest.
I'd also suggest you look at the cabling and faceplate help forum as I suspect you have a line issue as your sync speed is rather low for your attenuation. A poor line will also cause your noise margin to have a larger swing which is probably contributing to your problem.
EDIT: I've just seen your other thread which I've merged with this one (please just start one thread per topic).
Those stats confirm you have a serious line problem. In the first your attenuation is 47db in the second it is 50db. This shouldn't be changing like this. Also, in the first your noise margin was a healthy 10.6db but you were syncing at a higher speed than with a noise margin of 3db before. Your noise margin must be going up and down like a yo-yo.Last edited by Saturday; 08-07-07 at 04:49 PM.

Re: Speed Advice
Hi,
Thanks for merging did not think the first post went in correctly!
I have now moved the router and plugged it directly into the master socket and run a cat5e cable back to my pc
There is a huge improvement
Do the new stats look reasonable?
cheers

Re: Speed Advice
Hey, thanks for the help
I left it on for about 2 hrs and took the stats (below)
I am really worried becuase even though the connection speed is much better and speed tests have been much better the stability of the connection is awful. Up and down like a yo yo
sits around noise margin of 7 for ages then start dropping off to even below 4
hope you can give me some advice from the stats
thanks again you stars!

Re: Speed Advice
Your stats taken with your router plugged into the test socket do suggest that you have a wiring issue as you were able to get a better synch speed. You said you plugged your router into the master socket. However have you tried the test socket (the one accessed by unscrewing the lower half of the faceplate on your master socket)? If not try that, as there may still be some noise problems associated with extension wiring (using the test socket effectively disconnects all your extension wiring). Try running for a couple of hours and then post your stats again.
If you have already done that, then I suggest you use the Mognuts utility to set your target noise margin to something higher than the 7 dB default value (I suggest starting with 14 dB - you may be able to reduce it subsequently) this will give you a lower synch speed, but should improve your conection stability).Last edited by Steve case; 10-07-07 at 07:10 AM.
