      Speed advice appreciated

Right! I've spent what feels like most of the day trying to read other threads of a similar vein and think i've got the grasp of things but we'll see.

My Max has been activated a couple of days now and these are the stats as of now, they've hardley changed while i've known to look for them.

Connection Speed 8096 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 26.0 db 18.0 db
Noise Margin 13.1 db 14.0 db

Although having written that the noise margin has dropped from 14 or so it was yesterday. This is plugged directly into the master socket itself however there is no internal wiring anyway but thought better to try it.
Now from what i've read it would seem likely that my connection is capped at the 8mbps as it constantly connects solidly at the same value. Now to me the attenuation and noise margin seem to suggest i would be able to go faster (and perhaps to be moved to ADSL2+?!). I'll post the rest of the stats below but from my reading it seems i'm having few errors also. So i was thinking of asking sky to uncap the connection. However this is all based on my own dubious knowledge from reading other threads and so would appreciate a more educated opinion as to whether this would be a reasonable request.

Anything else i can post just let me know.

      Thanks

      Re: Speed advice appreciated

Yes. you're capped at 8096kbps and on G.DMT.

There are absolutely zero errors showing in your stats and even though with a noise margin of 13.1db the errors would be low I think you could safely assume that your line condition is easily capable of supporting an uncapped ADSL2+ connection.

Call Sky and tell them your line was capped for an earlier problem (whether it was or not) and insist on being put through to T3. They'll sort you out.

      Re: Speed advice appreciated

In response to the above advice i emailed sky and (although not quickly) they responded and did as asked and moved me to an uncapped line. However since then i've noticed while i wouldn't say my connection has become slower it certainly hasn't become faster. On speed tests previously i was getting somewhere between 5 and 7mbps which seem quite reasonable for the level i was synced at. However now i don't seem to be able to top 5mbps despite syncing at over 15. From what i can tell the change has led to an increase in errors and perhaps this is contributing to the slower speeds? Although i am connected wirelessly i was before so i would think this isn't the issue. I guess what i'm asking is was I better if at 8mb or is there something else holding me back?

      Thanks again!

      Re: Speed advice appreciated

You need to run the optimiser at a guess (see my sig).

Unless you are wireless in whihc case it could be a wirless issue.

Yes, your errors have gone up but that's inevitable on a fast ADSL2+ connection. They're still quite low so don't worry about it - they're certainly not enough to cause a significant drop (or even a detectable one) in your throughput.

As Reddwarfcrew says, assuming you're not wireless (which could be the main problem), try TCPOptimizer. Actually, run it anyway, whilst it won't improve a wireless connection it will remove any potential bottleneck between the router and the PC.
