      Advice needed on connection speed.

I have signed up to the mid package having got fed up with connection problems with orange. I was led to believe that I would get a minimum of 4mb speed connection. My router stats for downstream connection speed is listed as 1216 kbs, upstream is 416kbs, this never changes its the same everyday I live 1.18km from the exchange as the crow flies.
      My questions are:
Should my current connection speed be higher?
Is this connect capped? and can it be uncapped
what should i resonably expect my connection speed to be?
can sky increase my connection speed from my exchange?

      Thanks in advance
      Any help will be appreciated.
I will also updated this thread if progress is made.

So what is your noise margin then?
Try connecting via your NTE2005 test socket and see if it improves.

Re: Advice needed on connection speed.

Sky cant upgrade your connection speeds from the exchange, as you know bt own the exchanges and are the only ones that work in there, when you order the bb the speed is told to you or should be told to you as "speeds up to".. the line speed is determined on 2 things, the distance from your local exchange and the quality of your tel line.

Re: Advice needed on connection speed.

You are correct that the maximum speed that a connection can run is dependent on line conditions, however Sky can adjust (cap) the speed of the link from the DSLAM, network management is controlled from a central or distributed locations and does not require a physical presence in the exchange.

      @itsagas

Please post your simple router stats - without these it's hard to comment. See the first sticky in my signature at the bottom of this post for more info.

Re: Advice needed on connection speed.

Here are todays connection speeds etc:

Downstream speed 1216kbps line attenuation 15.5 noise margin 10.3db
upstream speed 416kbps line attenuation 30db noise margin 13.0db

should my connection be faster than this ?

Re: Advice needed on connection speed.

Can't say - you have the 15.5db reporting "bug".

You'll need to reboot your router , possibly a few times, until it starts reporting correctly and the attenuation changes from 15.5db.

However, looking at your noise margin you've probably been capped so there may be a bit more speed available if you can remove the reason for capping.

Re: Advice needed on connection speed.

Your attenuation figure is good (much lower than mine) - so you should in theory be able to achieve a higher speed. The basic stats you posted suggest that high levels of noise may be what is limiting your speed. Have you tried plugging your router into the test socket behind the faceplate on your master socket? If not then try that, browse the internet for an hour or two this evening, and then post your full stats.

Sorry- I hadn't spotted the potential 15.5 dB bug - see Saturday's response.

Re: Advice needed on connection speed.

Thank you all for the replys.
I didn't know about the 15.5 db bug. I have rebooted my router twice speed has gone up is now 1440kbps line attenuation is now 50db. I still think my connection speed should be faster. I also phoned sky cs they sort of agree it should be faster I have a ticket no and have been escalated to level 3 whatever that means?. I will reset my router again tomorrow and see if the connection speed has increased.
