6mb down to 1.5, then back to 6. Strange.
Hello all,
Signed up for Sky max back in December, initially I was getting d/l speeds of around 6mb but after getting new pc and some Homeplugs (great piece of kit BTW) I downloaded quite a lot of music (about 5 gig) and suddenly found the speed had dropped to about 1.5mb.
I found this site and tried the main socket behind the faceplate and I'm back to 6-ish. Does anyone know why this might have happened? I initially thought Sky were maybe capping/throttling my connection after hammering the P2P but having done some research I believe they don't do that on Max. Nothing else has changed on the line, no new extensions etc - the only thing I could think is that we are on one of three new estates in the area, one of which is massive and maybe BT activated a batch of lines at once (??) BUT I'm now back at 6-ish.
These are my stats before using the master socket:

I notice that my attenuation is now a lot lower, can this account for the difference? Why would it have been ok to begin with and then drop, both while using the "normal" faceplate plus?
Gotta say that overall I'm really impressed with Sky, but seem to be having problems with emails of late but that's another thread.
Oh and anyone having problems piping net access around the house should look at Homeplugs, I got mine from SolWise, superb company.

Re: 6mb down to 1.5, then back to 6. Strange.
max aint capped at all dont know about this 5 gig [i downloaded american army [2.5 gig and then a movie 3.7 gig ]and still had 1meg download speeds after that, it could be any number of reasons f,or example poor internal wiring ,busy exchange [although ur stats did have some errors on it ]if its fine now dont rock the boat as it may tip over

Re: 6mb down to 1.5, then back to 6. Strange.
Thanks for the replies, any idea what might have caused the errors? The stats are confusing to me..... Could it be the issue of lots of new line activations by BT on the new estates? Can't think of anything else that's changed after I got the good speeds to begin with.
I'll avoid ringing Sky if that's the consensus of opinion. Is there any way of me getting my 6Mb back with the normal faceplate (without replacing it, my DIY skills are lacking to say the least).

Re: 6mb down to 1.5, then back to 6. Strange.
errors tend to be line noise [maybe try a new adsl filter [in case the old one is on its last legs

Thanks dtr42, will try a new filter then.
Also thanks to Commandercarr and dflour69 for your help.

Re: 6mb down to 1.5, then back to 6. Strange.
mine was up and down all over the place last night, decided to brave the dreaded cupboard where all my equipement is, armed with a new filter.
Discovered most of the problem is line noise, unplugging everything else sovles the speed problem, but obviously is not a long term solution.
Original filter = crap
2nd filter = crap
3rd filter = crap
4th filter =
personally i thought all filters were the same, but this proves me totally wrong.
Now have decent speeds again even with all my other equipment still plugged in.
So what have i learned, always try every filter i own whenever there is a speed problem.
