Good sync, bad download????
Hi Everyone
I have just signed up my father in law on SKY BB MID
Got it set up and running.
Stats and speed test below.
The sync speed I am reasonably happy with as I believe the line is capped at 2 meg. (mine is and I live 2 doors down and I suspect they have done the same with this one)
The download speed is the problem: Its only half the sync speed.
Ive checked the wiring, all seems ok. Checked master, secondary connections (2 and 5 used only). I have even plugged straight into test socket with filter.
The connection is wired to a pc and I have been into router and turned off UnPN and turned off wireless access.
I have also tried the optomizer.
Cant think what to try now???? The house is only 5 years old so wiring should be pretty new in the walls and upto the house.
The only thing I can suspect now is the master socket????
Please help, im pulling my hair out!!!!

Re: Good sync, bad download????
The connection isn't capped - it's just a long line (63.5db) and probably a bit noisy.
Slow download speeds in relation to the connection speed are generally down to:
- a wireless connection (the most common but you say you're wired)
- incorrect TCP/IP settings (not in this case as you have used TCPoptimizer)
- an overloaded speedtest server (try this one)
- a noise margin that's too low and/or high errors on the line
My bet would be on the third or the last - your noise margin at 6.1db is nearing the limit for a stable connection.
You may get some help/insights from the first sticky in my signature for noise margin issues.

Re: Good sync, bad download????
Hi, Thansk for the reply. Ive tried several different speedtest sites including the one you advised. I get near enough the same speed every time.
How do i check for errors on the line please?
I will read up a bit more on noise.

Re: Good sync, bad download????
ive posted the full router stats at the top now if someone would be kind to check em.
I think i read somewhere that you can raise the noise level using one of the utilities on here. would that help???

Re: Good sync, bad download????
There's nothing too dramatic errorwise in your stats - a bit high but not desperate (ignore the 15.5db attenuation - it's a bug).
Your noise margin was fine at the time you took the stats but that's not to say that it wasn't too low earlier. What you need to do is set a noise margin which always stays above ~7db. Typically this means set it at 7db in the mid evening (when noise is highest) or 10-12db in the morning (when the noise is lowest) i.e. the number you set it at will depend on the time of day you do it.
Use Mognuts utility to do it and then leave the router powered/connected. If you lose power or connection it will need to be done again.

Re: Good sync, bad download????
Thanks very much for your help. So just to confirm:
i could try using the util to set noise at 7 in evening OR 10-15 in the morning and this may help with conection speed.
Thanks again

Re: Good sync, bad download????
It may do - doesn't cost anything to try

Re: Good sync, bad download????
Well, reported a voice fault to bt via there website. Within the hour they closed the call and there is a massive difference as you can see. Get the same better result on Namesco BroadbandMax ADSL Broadband Bandwidth speedtest | Test your ADSL Broadband connection speed too.
Happy now.
I did delete all IE7 history this morning though. Do you normally have to delete all history before each test? Maybe that was why i was seeing the same result yesterday???

Re: Good sync, bad download????
Deleting the History/Cookies/Cache only helps on pure HTML speedtests, Where your browser has the speedtest files stored and then assumes the test is over giving "cached" results!
