Is this the best speed I can expect for my line?

      Hi guys,

New to all of this, but would really appreciate someone to run their eyes over my stats and tell me if I can realistically expect faster speeds?

I believe that I have been capped at 2816kbps, however, would like to know whether I could expect more, I currently download at speeds anywhere between 2Mbps->2.2Mbps. Any additional speed is better than nothing, considering it is a slow speed.

If you believe that I could squeeze out an extra 512kbps, I will ask the tier 3 guys to have a look into it for me. Otherwise, I'll shut up and live with it.

Re: Is this the best speed I can expect for my line?

      Welcome to the forum

You may have been capped but it's not possible to be sure without a comparison with your test socket.

However, you need to consider why this might be so. Your line is showing a high level of errors. Were you connecting at your attenuation potential (~3500kbps) those errors would be much higher. If you've not been capped then your connection speed is simply the most your router can manage with a poor line.

Can I suggest you do the following:
      • spend a little time reading the forum. This topic is raised as a new thread at least once a day, sometimes several times a day
      • you fix your line errors
      • then you consider calling Sky based on the outcome

Re: Is this the best speed I can expect for my line?

Thank you for the quick reply!

The router is plugged straight into the test socket. I originally had it plugged into another socket and the line attenuation was 63.5db instead of 58.0db.

How do you recommend I go about fixing the line errors? I am more than happy to spend a little money to resolve this e.g. better adsl filter or tweak the modem to maximise throughput.

In the meantime, I will scour the forums for similar threads.

      Thanks!

Do you mean the test socket or master socket? The test socket is hidden inside your master socket and is revealed if you unscrew the faceplate.

The test socket gives a direct connection to the wires that go to the exchange and disconnects all other home phone wiring. If you are getting those errors with your test socket then you have a problem with your line between you and the exchange that only BT can fix.

Re: Is this the best speed I can expect for my line?

Yes, I have removed the front plate and plugged the router into the test socket.

I spoke to BT last week regarding poor signal attenuation and they said that I must take this up with SKY and in turn, SKY would raise a ticket against BT to sort out the problem. Is this the correct process?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, just so I know who to take this up with and get it resolved.

Thank you for all your help!

Re: Is this the best speed I can expect for my line?

If you have that amount of noise (errors) when plugged into your test socket then you have a major problem with the line between you and the exchange. As you have found, BT will not be interested in any ADSL problems, they will only respond to voice faults.

Do you have any hissing/crackling on your voice calls. If so, report this to BT. If you can't hear any problem then report an intermittent fault.
