Stats look good but online tests are not???

      hi all,

been reading this forum and must say u guys are awesome. i have sky b since last nov and have had ups and downs with it. however after reading some threads, i have plugged my router into the test socket of my master socket, have carried out the tcp optimiser and got the below stats....

however, whenever i run these online tests, they all seem to say that my download is only 8mb? any reason why this is?

i am on the max package and am wondering what others are getting for downstream?

also what is the best way to test my download rate for music/videos? but i guess downloading from an ftp site in uk would be good?

      Welcome to the forum

Many speedtest sites are overloaded and/or aren't able to cope with a higher speed than 8meg.

A site which usually gives reliable tests is this one although I've noticed it also sometimes struggles at peak times. You should see something around 13000kbps on a 15323kbps connection.

Re: Stats look good but online tests are not???

nope, that site gave me 8meg aswell

there was one speed test that gave me 13meg

nevermind, i have tried everything now, the stats im not sure how good or bad they are or if there is anything i can do.

next task is to configure torrent downloads!

Re: Stats look good but online tests are not???

There's nothing in your stats to suggest any reason for your slow downloads. They are very good with practically zero errors.

Of course the most obvious reason for your problem would be that Sky was throttling your connection but that's never been reported by any customer for LLU (so far). The only capping they do is to the connection speed and that's to deal with line errors.

I feel that the problem may be local to you i.e. something wrong with your PC set up. But you've used TCPoptimizer?

All I can think of is that you may have something on your PC either limiting your internet connection (a common culprit is MacAfee or the like) or using it (i.e. malware).

Re: Stats look good but online tests are not???

hmm perhaps! the above stats were when i was plugged into my test socket. i have now taken then out and plugged into normal socket. my downstream is down to 12.5mb.

however still getting crap speeds at utorrent even after all the tweaks people have mentioned (on this forum and others)

not sure what could be capping my speed as it is definately not Sky. I use my work laptop that has symantec anti-virus on and home pc (though switched off most of times) has mcafee....

Re: Stats look good but online tests are not???

      hi all again!

ok my connection on the router is about 14.5mb

however, whenever i run online tests i get between 8-10mb downstream?

i know some have tried to explain why this maybe but i think its these online tests that are crap, as they all vary soooo much!

so the best way to test download speed would be to download a file from a well known source or ftp site????

Re: Stats look good but online tests are not???

      Hi

I've got similar doubts about online tests - see stats in sig

But I can download from rapidshare with a download manager at 1.20mb, which I think is reasonable

I'm not sure what that download figure relates to, although I've read elswhere that it's a10% figure

So assuming 1.2mb download on Rapidshare = 12,000kb then my connection would by 12mb?

Not sure if any of that makes any sense - or if I'm talking a load of crap
