Why does my connection speed suck??

      Hi all,

new today so please go easy on me!

I have read a huge amount of threads on connection speed over the past few days and am now more confused than ever.

I live very near to C. Manchester so assume that I am relatively near to my local exchange of Eccles. My line attenuation seems to confirm this. My telephone wiring is relatively new, having had BT install a new line specifically for my BB a few months ago (I do not use this line for anything but BB). I have also run some of the diagnostics on this Forum and the results seem to indicate that I am already on ADSL2+ at my exchange. Finally, as far as I can gather my SNR of 7.7dB is also pretty good.

How come I am only getting download speeds of about 4.4MB???

My results are below: any help appreciated.

Re: Why does my connection speed suck??

      Welcome to the forum

A little more reading wouldn't hurt see the first sticky in my signature for an explanation of the relationship between attenuation, noise margin and connection speed. You'll probably also find a couple of hundred posts on the forum which would also cover the problem you have.

      To answer your questions:
      • You're only getting 4.4mb downloads because you're only connecting at 4911kbps
      • Yes you're on ADSL2+
      • Yes you should be getting a higher connection speed with an attenuation of 33.5db
      • Yes a noise margin of 7.7db is fine

To answer the questions you haven't asked:
      • For you to be connecting at only 4911kbps with an attenuation of 33.5db either means you've been capped and/or there's a problem with your line.
      • It doesn't look like you're capped as your noise margin is not very high (capping pushes this up) and you're on ADSL2+ (Sky usually cap to G.DMT)
      • No I can't tell if your line is generating errors as the router was only connected for 9 minutes and not used much in this time.

When you've finished reading I suggest you try a connection with your router plugged directly into the test socket with the supplied cable. You'll find the test socket hidden inside your master socket (assuming you have an NTE5).

PS Please post just once per problem. Multiple identical posts are unnecessary - I've deleted your other one.

Re: Why does my connection speed suck??

      Saturday,

thanks for your help with that last post.

I connected my router into the master socket and saw a slight improvement in d/l speed (from 4.2 to 4.4) but when I connected to the test socket saw a huge increase. As below:

So what is the problem? Is it capped or is it a poor line after my master socket? If it is the poor line, have BT got an obligation to come out to improve the wiring??

      Thanks

      That's certainly quite a jump!

No, the jump shows very clearly that you are not capped. Yes, your line is very poor after the test socket. No, BT have no obligation after the test socket.

What's happening is that something in your internal wiring is introducing an enormous amount of noise into the circuit. The test socket isolates every bit of phone wiring in your house. What you'll now have to do is experiment to find what the problem is. It is probably one of your extensions, possibly a phone, digibox fault or even a dodgy or missing microfilter.

Wow! That just goes to show what a difference connecting to the Test Socket can make.

I can see people all over skyuser country busily unscrewing thier faceplates

Re: Why does my connection speed suck??

I used the same microfilter for the test socket as I had been doing for the extension with the poorer results so presumably it can't be the filter. And this line is used solely for my BB connection - nothing else at all is plugged into it.

Does that point to just poor wiring within the master socket??

Re: Why does my connection speed suck??

Or the extension you have been using could cause it. Even the sky ones have been known to have a dodgy plug fitted.

You'll find plenty of information and advice in the 'Cabling and Faceplate Forum'.

See this sticky to start with:

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/cabli...fraid-ask.html

You may also want to consider fitting a filtered faceplate (see the ADSLNation thread).

      http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/cabli...ace-plate.html

You may also want to check if your socket still has the bell-wire connected. You only need wires connected to numbers 2 and 5 within the socket. The bell-wire, I believe, is connected to number 3 and can safely be removed.

All this can be confirmed in the aforementioned forums.
