      New Max customer query

      Hi,
I have read a few posts on this site and immediately decided to register. Loads of information and we really need to take our hats off to the people who provide such excellent advice for free.

I have been a Sky Max (16mb) customer for 2 weeks now after eventually leaving Pipex (OMG what a painful nightmare, which is till ongoing actually).

Anyway my various speed tests report that i am typically getting:

      3mb down and 644kb up

Sync speed is 5344kb down and 768 up
atten is 43dB down and 27dB up
Noise is 5.7dB down and 13dB up

I have tried my Netgear GT in all of the sockets in the house and these numbers DO NOT change. (I have not been able to identify a new style master socket, but I have id'd an old style one...still no change)

      My questions are thus:

Should i be getting better performance?
Is it likely to improve? (my exchange only got unbundled on 08-03-07!)
Any ideas how I improve things?

I am a professional physicist and an RF engineer (not coms though!) so dont hold back on the tech.

      TIA

I would of thought you'd be getting around 8mbps + download with 43db line attenuation I imagine that its your extension wiring that's causing you grief.
Slightly tricky if you have old fashioned wiring without a demountable master faceplate.

Suggest you identify the bell wiring and disconnect it at each end of the extensions. You only need pins 2 and 5 connected at each socket.

Hi and thanks for the reply.
I am not so sure that it is the internal wiring although i will definately check your link out.

I have used a laptop and sequentially used my router in each ext. pt through the flat. The stats do not change suggesting that it is not the wiring perhaps???

What flag is that on your avatar BTW?

Its the new Derbyshire Flag, it was designed as part of a Radio Derby completion.
BBC - Derby - Discover Derbyshire - Revealed - The Derbyshire Flag

There are quite a few flying round the area so I though I would do my bit.

Since all your sockets are interconnected chances are that the bell wiring is introducing noise all over the place. I've got 4 extensions and removing the bell wiring in stages progressively improved my noise margin.

      Cool
Devon got there own a few years back much to the Cornish annoyance yay

Anyway I followed the ext. optimisation wizard and my noise figure jumped to 15dB!!!!! Wowahweewha

However, I am only synching at 4mb

I phoned Sky tier 3 and spoke to a guy there who told me that i was only on ADSL and not the ADSL2 that i was paying for. Boooooo

He has changed my exchange profile from 4mb ADSL to 12mb ADSL2 and my noise has dropped but is still ok at 9dB

My snych is still only 5mb tho?

      2 things worry me.

1 Why are Sky setting peoples default exchange profiles to ADSL normal at low speeds when they are paying for ADSL2? (They seem to be hiding behind the tech aspect of this hoping that poeple wont notice/understand)

2 Why with my profile sorted and my noise figure excellent am i only getting 5mb synch?

Any help with these would be much appreciated.

      B

Probably best for you to post detailed stats.
I use Mossywells bounce router tool myself.

Have you tried running the TCP Optimiser suggested by the MOD at head of these threads?

Also, how are you connecting to your router? If wirelessly, via a USB1, which will give a max 5-6MB download, despite the 11Mb rating, this might also explain your speed problem!

      Re: New Max customer query

I have to point out that with these stats >

Sync speed is 5344kb down and 768 up
atten is 43dB down and 27dB up
Noise is 5.7dB down and 13dB up

You will never get a faster connection as your snr of 5.7 is not good. Either your line is just plain poor or you have internal wiring / microfilter / interference caused by the ringer wire.... Remember the higher your snr the better, but also remember that when your snr is better your speed will be better hence the snr will roughtly always be the same i.e 5.7 but your sync speed speed will rise untill you reach the 8mbs cap. I have plugged in a really bad telephone extension on purpose and the snr drops alot limiting my sync to 8128 which would be great normally but without the poor extension i get 9824 sync, so as you can see the difference in bad wiring is great. An easy way to test your line is to only plug your router into the main / test socket with a microfilter and if nothing improves then have a look at your main socket wiring and have a look here >

      Good luck.
