Duff Speed
Hi,
First time post here, so hello
Got my Sky BB activated last night (Mid Package) but I'm pretty disappointed with the speed I'm getting as well as the ping times I'm receiving.
I'm 1.8KM away from my exchange but I'm only getting 2MB Down and 4K up, the ping times are sitting between 90 and 110ms - Attenuation is sitting at 65db at the moment.
The thing is the phone line itself seems quite noisy (it was only installed a couple of weeks ago), we seem to be hearing what sounds like the radio over the line. Could this be affecting the speed that I'm getting at all, should I fault the line with BT.
Is there anything I can do with Sky to try and get the speed improved. 2MB's not bad but I'd like to think I could get higher given the distance from the exchange?
Thanks in advance

Re: Duff Speed
Welcome to the forum
Straight line distance from the exchange is a poor indication of the actual line length I'm afraid. Attenuation is a pretty accurate indication and yours suggests that the line length is ~4.7km. A very poor quality line may give an artificially high attenuation figure but only by a few db at most.
An attenuation of 65db means that you are nearing the limit for a good, stable ADSL connection. The normal range would be up to 2000kbps and that's what you're getting. To see what the best you could hope for is, using the supplied router cable, plug your router directly into the test socket which you'll find hidden inside your master socket. If you get a connection speed increase (it won't be much if any at all) then you should consider improving your filters.
Lastly, do you mean 400k up?Last edited by Saturday; 04-04-07 at 04:52 PM.

Re: Duff Speed
Thanks Saturday, I'll try plugging it into the test socket to see if that works.
Sorry I meant 400k up rather than 4k up.
Anything that can be done to improve on the ping times though?

Re: Duff Speed
You're almost certainly on Interleave. Were you on a Fast connection then your ping times would be ~25% lower.
You could ask Sky to move you to Fast but they will be very reluctant, partly because Interleave is the default for most customers and also because of your high attenuation line.

Re: Duff Speed
Well I tried plugging everything into the test socket last night no difference. I can't put up with the kind of ping response times I'm getting - they were up into the 200s at some points last night so it's Bye Bye Sky BB for me.

Re: Duff Speed
Can i ask what speeds you were getting from your previous ISP? Because you have such a high Attenuation.

Re: Duff Speed
I've just recently moved house and was on 10MB cable at my previous place. Unfortunately, I've moved to a non-cable area now.
I'm not too bothered about the speeds I'm getting to be honest, it's just the ping times. I do a lot of online gaming etc and the performance I'm getting from Sky is just shocking - I just can't play games online with those kind of ping times.
