    Sky+ USB port

This is a discussion on Sky+ USB port within the Sky+ forums, part of the Sky & Sky+ TV category; given that the Playstation 1 and 2 both had things on them "for future use" and Sony never did use ...

given that the Playstation 1 and 2 both had things on them "for future use" and Sony never did use them it could be that the ones on the Sky+ were put on and then what ever Sky was planning to do with them fell through.

Sky may not be planning to do anything at all...... it's cheaper to have these connections at the start, rather than having to release a new box when new features are needed. There's an ethernet connection on new Sky+ boxes, probably there to provide VOD at some stage when broadband gets faster.

      Re: Sky+ USB port

I have sky plus Freesat and I can connect an external hard drive to,the USB port on it so that I can record on it as well as the Freesat box. I have a 1tb on Freesat plus 1tb on external hard drive that I can use via the box.
why can't sky do the same on their boxes using the USB on the the front that serves no purpose as such?

      Re: Sky+ USB port

Sadly, despite 2 USB sockets and 1 eSATA socket being present on the Sky+ HD STBs and the SkyHD STB, they are not usable.

The USB sockets used to be 'live' for power and many Sky customers would use them to charge things such as their Wii controllers.

The guess is because Sky are worried that someone may access the raw files and upload them to the Internet or convert them to something (MKV, MP4 or AVI file) and upload that instead.

Not much chance of that happening, I believe Sky+ recordings have a pretty unbreakable encryption.

So the fact that there are various public downloads with Sky's logos appearing in them doesn't count then?

You only need to search for some of the various shows which Sky commissioned on some well known torrent sites to see this.

I would imagine they've been captured via some recording hardware.

      Re: Sky+ USB port

This is very possible. I do remember reading something about some kit which could be installed in a PC to accept a viewing card but I don't have the links. It wouldn't be too hard to capture the Firmware and decompile it too. From there I am sure that someone could get the suitable codes to unencode the programming material.

Yes Sky's security is tough, but computing power and hacker knowledge has improved since it was first introduced.

      Re: Sky+ USB port

I just meant they would have been captured using the analogue outputs from the box to a recorder (not sure if HDMI is possible, think the HDCP stops that)
