Watching old box
I think after searching I think I'm right but just to confirm. I have a new 2tb box. I am not wanting to transfer anything from my old box but do want to set up the new box ASAP to capture new recordings. But I do also want to watch things I have recorded on my old box. Everything is FTA so can I just sit the old box near the tv and connect to mains and hdmi cable to watch content from my old box even after the viewing card is paired to the new box. Indeed will I even need the viewing card in the old box if I'm just viewing saved content
thanks

Re: Watching old box
If your old box is a black Sky+ HD box it will display searching for listings and will not allow the planner to be viewed unless it is connected to the satellite dish. To play FTA content will also require insertion of a viewing card with Sky+ entitlement enabled.

Re: Watching old box
Once the EPG has loaded the dish connection can be removed and over a few days there shouldn't be a problem provided ECO mode isn't set or the box's mains supply interrupted.
You can use your existing viewing card without re-pairing. In some circumstances it may complain about wrong card but this shouldn't prevent you from watching FTA recordings.

Re: Watching old box
Swapping cards is much easier with the new firmware. This should help you a great deal in this instance.
What I would encourage you to do is to watch anything that ISN'T available to download via the On Demand section. Record anything that you want to keep and will never be recorded on to a DVD or something like that and watch the remainder ASAP.
Remember that much of the free-to-air content is available to download.
