      Intermittent freeze on playback

I have had a Sky+ Hd Samsung, 500gb disk, for a couple of years and it's been excellent. Lately it has started to freeze on some playbacks, not necessarily on exactly the same spot but thereabouts. Everything else is as normal. Tried reboots and downloading the latest software version (off, press Backup on top of the box, on, hold till 4 lights are on).Update worked, but no effect on problem. 'Services' doesn't appear in my menu so I can't find how to defrag or remove corrupt addresses. Any thoughts?

You should be able to press the <Services> button on the Sky remote. Press the <Right> button and this will highlight 'Setting'.

      Now press <Down> 0 1 <Select> 7 and 'Sky+ Rebuild' should be highlighted.

Press <Down> and follow the on-screen prompts to defrag the planner & file structure.

      Scubbie,

Thanks, I've taken it as far the Sky Rebuild - would never have got there on my own. Will proceed as soon as everyone has watched/copied to disk the saved episodes of Frozen Planet!

The Planner Rebuild is safe to perform at any time. The only things to be aware of are:

      • nothing can be viewed or recorded whilst it is happening
      • it will take around 10-15 minutes to complete
      • it should be performed once a month or so, particularly if you record and delete content frequently

It is the 'System Reset' (the next option along) which you must be careful of. This would wipe the contents of the drive.

In the mean time, keep an eye on the price of hard drives and seriously consider replacing the existing drive with a 1TB, 1.5TB or 2TB PVR Hard Drive. I have a 2TB drive in mine and it works well.

The software that mrmt32 has written works really well.

      Re: Intermittent freeze on playback

      Scubbie,
Thanks again for further info. I've done the Sky+ Rebuild - we do indeed do lots of recording and deleting and the poor old box hasn't been tidied for over 2 years .... so let's hope this works.

I'm reasonably familiar with HDD problems on PCs, though I've never yet had to deal with corrupted sectors by reformatting. I asume this is what is meant by 'System Reset'? So that's the next thing to try if the problem persists, and if this fails ....

Thanks even more for your reassurance on swapping out the disk for a bigger one, and pointing me to the software needed. I already found the excellent instructions on how to physically change a HDD in a Samsung box, and if I have to go this route I'll have a good grovel round the threads for info on make/model/vendor

      Re: Intermittent freeze on playback

A 'System Reset' will completely wipe all the recordings on your STB's hard drive, so only consider this as a last resort.

It is possible that the hard drive could be failing. If this is the case, the consider getting a replacement drive. The software does work on the Samsung.

I have an Amstrad DRX890C with a 2TB drive and my friend also has a 2TB drive in her Samsung STB. Both work very well.
