Sky + to second TV - cable issues

Hi wonder if anyone can help

I have an 3 part aeril lead going from Sky plus box lead in the lounge to a surface mount in the lounge then another lead which runs through airing cupboard and behind Kitchen cupboards to another surface mount in the bedroom and then another lead from the bedroom surface mount into the back of my second tv - problem is when I use that existing 3 part wire with the TV Link device it doesnt work, meaning no light comes on but I can watch Sky it just means to change channel at night I gotta get outta bed and goto the lounge ?? the lead worked fine with my top up tv that I had before sky +

I tested the tv link in the back of the sky plus box which they recommend as a test and the device came on. So then I ran a standard tv coaxial cable losely through my hallway to the second tv and it all worked, what I dont understand is that the existing cable is also a standard coaxial cable (even though its in three parts) so why wouldnt the tv link work ?

I had a look at wireless video / audio senders so wouldnt need the aerial wire at all so bought one from argos yesterday which said worked with Sky rigged it all up and the poxy thing didnt work properly one minute I could change channel, next minute not so thats going back to Argos

Have read that some of these wireless video audio senders will either work on IR or IRDA remote signal but not both - how do I know which signal mine gives off - did ring sky and they couldnt tell me (great eh).

Anyone recommend a wireless video audio sender that works 100% with Sky Plus.

      Cheers

      L

In order for the TV Link to work it is necessary for the supply from the RF2 socket on the Sky box to be avalible at the second device. as you have checked your link at the box and run a temp lead to the second set which works, there must be a problem with your sockets or plugs.
Check the plugs are fitted correctly, and that the sockets do not contain any DC blocking capacitors, this is prob best done by changing them.

      Hi,

Could you please explain what a DC blocking capacitor is, as I have had a similar problem recently.

Mine used to work, but cant now seem to get it to work going from the 2nd RF out to my second TV. Have recently had everything dissed whilst decorating and now all reconnected, but have set up slightly different this time (just took some kit out of the set up). I ended up just coming off a booster and not bothering about it for now, but would like to get it working again some time but could not figure out why it did not seem to be outputting from RF2. The picture on second TV was grainy, indicating no signal or very weak, but when I came off booster it was fine, but this of course means no TV link options.

      Many thanks,

      Tony

A blocking capacitor stops static charges from reaching the TV from the aerial, and it also cuts down the risk of electric shocks to aerial installers.

Basically, it's a capacitor connected in series with the inner core connection. At 900 MHz (the frequency of TV signals), it lets the signals pass virtually unhindered, but to use a magic eye, the Sky box outputs a low voltage DC current to power the magic eye. The blocking capacitor won't allow this through, so the magic eye won't work.

Even badly crimped or loose connections will stop this low DC voltage in its tracks.

P.S. A fault on many Sky+ boxes is the failure of the TV modulator, causing weak and grainy pictures via the RF out socket. Replacement modulators are available from Satcure, bit it's a fiddly de-soldering/resoldering job, not for the inexperienced.

Re: Sky + to second TV - cable issues

      Hi Old Nick,

      Thanks for your explanation.

I am going to be upgrading to Sky HD soon, so I wont bother with trying a repair. I think it might work (if its not failed) if I change my cables around, but I will now rethink this again when I go to Sky HD. I am also getting a new TV, so everything will have to be completely redone anyway.

      Many thanks for your help.

      Cheers,

      Tony
