Copying from sky + to external HDD

      Hi All

My Sky+ HDD is filling up faster than i can watch (bit of a trekky fan !). I have a 1TB toshiba external HDD storage device. Can i simply plug this into the USB connector at the front of the Sky+ box and set the various recorded programmes to copy to the Toshiba HDD? I realise its real time so i would set it to run overnight. Then - if i can do the above - can the Sky+ box read from my toshiba external HDD so that i can select the programmes at a later date or would i have to write the files on the Toshiba external HDD to a DVD writer and then watch them through the standard DVD player .

      Thanks in advance all.

      GMCHAS

Re: Copying from sky + to external HDD

It will not work I'm afraid, it would not be possible to copy anything from the Sky+HDD even in real time, on to an external drive. Apart from the software considerations the USB is not fully enabled. Even removing the Sky+HDD and putting into a PC to copy will not work as the drive is encrypted.
The only way you can save off the Sky+ box is in real time to a DVD/ HDD recorder. Your best bet may be to replace the Sky+HDD with a bigger one, as many have done. Full instructions for doing this are on the forum.

No you cant use an external drive via usb, they arnt enabled on these boxes.
Free some space up by recording what you have to a dvd recorder. This would have to be done via the scart or rf out tho.
Edit - bit slow tonite The bigger HD is another good option.

Apparently, and I've not tested it, but if the recordings were FTA, ie made from one of These FTA Channels, then +Extract WILL not only allow you to pull them off the drive - it will also allow you to convert them from "STR" to Mpeg, allowing playback on your PC or capable DVD player - Obv this is faster than recording them in real time...

Re: Copying from sky + to external HDD

Good info Mike, the only problem is that you have to remove the HDD to do it. If only Sky would fully enable the USB port or even the ethernet, this would make life easier.

Yup - Mind you, I can see the Ethernet being utilised at some stage in the future for the VOD service, so who knows what the clever hackers will be able to do then!

Re: Copying from sky + to external HDD

I am going to rry this +Extract over the next few days, as I now have all 100 episodes of "In the Night Garden" on my "old" PVR3 upstairs (500Gb HD) and It's down to 2% free space....

Might even see if it can be done with FTA HD channels - now that would be good!

Re: Copying from sky + to external HDD

Other than +Extract, you can only copy them to your PC if you have a video capture card and then only in 'real time'. The method GSMGuy is testing would involve removing the HDD from your box, I don't know if you are prepared to do this. Maybe he will give us a report on his success or otherwise.
The Copy button can only be used to copy to a VCR, DVD, or HDD recorder. The last would probably be your best bet, these are quite cheap now and can be got for under 50, for example-
Acoustic Solutions DVD Recorder with 80GB HDD - Aria Technology

This one is on special offer so you would have to be quick.
Acoustic Solutions DVD Recorder with 160GB HDD - Aria PC

It is amazing not long ago you would have paid this for a HDD on it's own.
