Sky+ Installation signal problem please help

i have just had a sky + box installed today but the picture freezes on many channels and on some it says there is no satellite signal. Input 1 signal strength is around 10%. signal quality about 40% Input 2 is not being used as I am using a communal feed.

What I dont understand is that the sky+ box replaced a sky box which had no problems. the signal strength was much higher on that one.

The Sky + box is an Amstrad A2P0524

I wasn't in the flat when the box was installed but I am led to believe the engineer said he had tested the signal strength at the wall and it was poor and that these newer boxes are more 'sensitive' to poor signal strength unlike the old ones. Can this possibly be true? why he didn't check with a different box I dont know.

Any views on the engineers statement - am I stuck with the old box?

      thanks for your help

Different boxes can react differently to a weaker signal, but not to the degree you have quoted.

How much higher was the signal strength on the old box?

He was a clueless installer - not an "engineer". Ask Sky to send someone with a brain. He shouldn't have left it in a non-working state.

Have you still got the old receiver, if so fit it and see if it works. This should prove the problem.

He may have just pulled one of the 'f'f plugs and not sorted it out, it's worth checking the lead.

Then ring Sky and let them know tht since their "installer" has been, nothing works.

thanks for everyone's comments. I have managed to get the communal engineer system 'bloke' for the block round and as you say Sam it was a clueless installer (not engineer) - in fact there were two of them. Apparently (he did a socket test or something), signal was fine even at 10% according to him it is about signal quality in multi dwelling units. All the clueless installers had to do was a firmware upgrade. Everything fixed by pressing the back-up button!!

thanks again for your help and lesson learned

The firmware update is a mandatory part of the installation. Write to Sky, explain the problem and tell them that you had to pay an independent to fix it. Ask for a refund and they'll give you a month's free viewing.
      How to complain

Re: Sky+ Installation signal problem please help

thanks Sam, will do as you suggest.

Another quick question. The flat next to me does not use their sky cable - just the tv output. Their wall plate is directly opposite mine so I am presuming the ducting runs between the both. My neighbour has happily said I can use their satellite feed, so I can have two feeds into the back of the SKY+ box rather the one.

My query is: how difficult is it to put a cable in the back of a wall plate (will have to change it to have two satellite outputs) is it like changing a plug wiring or very difficult?

      thanks in advance

Re: Sky+ Installation signal problem please help

It is usually simple as long as the cable reaches, It usually has a screw that holds the centre core and then a collar that holds the outer sheaf down.

You could always just fit an 'f' plug to it and then use an inline connector to make a patch lead and put the lead directly into the back of the receiver if it doesn't fit too easily.
