Sky+ Box Standy by - Reconnect old box question

      Hi
I got home tonight to find my Thompson Sky + box on permanent standy and making a constant buzzing sound. I have looked at the problem and tried to solve it by gathering info online to no avail.
I have just spoken to Sky who tell me it will cost me 65 to send an engineer round to install a reconditioned box next Tuesday. Can anyone tell me why an engineer needs to fit this recon box. Is it not just a case of fitting the box exactly as my current box is fitted? Ive looked on ebay and can see boxes on there quite cheap but is there more to it than simply connecting the leads in? (sorry for my ignorance but haven't had this issue before. Is Ebay the best palce to look for boxes?

Also, I still have my old basic sky box in the loft. Can I simply plug this box in using just the one cable from the dish until I obtain a new Sky+ box or will this no work? Edit: Have just rummaged around the loft and found the old box and have connected but can only pick up very limited channels. BBC Channels are okay but no ITV, C4 etc and more importantly no Sky sports as it states the wrong type of card is inserted.
      Thanks

They are an easy swap 2 mins.

You can use you old receiver for now but you will have to ring Sky to pair the viewing card with it and then ring again when you get the replacement Sky+ receiver.

For 65 I would go with Sky, at least you get another 3 month warranty, you never know what might turn up from e-bay.

Re: Sky+ Box Standy by - Reconnect old box question

      Cheers for the reply Smithy99.

Ive managed to source a new SKY+ receiver from a friend for a 10 so I will fit it and give Sky a call to pair it up with my card when I collect it tomorrow.

I did set my old Sky box and now this morning all the channels were available except for Sky Sports - Screen states wrong type of card inserted. I will do without the Sports for one night.

      Thanks again for the info.
