Some recordings are failing and the wife couldn't turn it on last week, got it working having removed the power cord for the third time. I should add that it sat on standby, the unit wasn't actually dead.

Have you performed a forced software re-download as a recent release that Sky backed out caused similar symptoms?

Had the same problem, box stuck on stand by. Tried all manner of things to correct it including a software download, but to no avail even though it went through the process. So like mine it does sound like a failing hard drive, best bet if your out of warranty is to phine sky and pay the 65. Saves on the messing about lol

for 65 you can a HUGE hdd (and a new HDD will probably come with a 3year warranty).

http://www.ebuyer.com/product/129413 just as an example (500GB with 3 year warranty for <65).

Re: Sky Plus hard drive failing, replacement advice?

Thanks Reddwarfcrew, I'd sooner diy than pay Sky 65 for a callout. Will check the software update though.

So, do I need a pc to format the hard drive or can I just plug and play it in the Sky box? I ask as earlier postings suggest without setting up on a pc, the box will limit the usage of a bigger disk, later postings suggest this is no longer the case?

Re: Sky Plus hard drive failing, replacement advice?

You can pop the HDD into the sky box, but it will format to a limit of 270Gb (or 750Gb for SkyHD)

If you pop into a PC and format with SkyCopyPlus, then it will format to a much higher limit (limit of 750Gb for Sky+, 1.5TB for Sky HD i think).

Also have a read thru http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky/8...ard-drive.html

Re: Sky Plus hard drive failing, replacement advice?

Not conculsive, so you can only try and see what happens.

Further to the above, quoted from the link i posted earlier:
      Suggested Drives
      Sky+ Upgrades (300GB - 500GB)
As of 8 September 2007 it seems that either EPG 4.10 or 4.20 may have removed the 270GB upper limit on FSR. The limit on supported drive size now appears to be 1TB with the box natively formatting drives up to and including 500GB (i.e. Same as Sky HD boxes).
