Red face New to Sky+ and need help

Hello to all. I just joined today and I hope you can help me out. I live in Geneva and do not have a viewing card of any sort. I have an old sky box (no bells and whistles and no card) just the standard and it receives all the free channels fine. I just bought a Sky+ box from a friend who moved and I want to know if I can use the recording feature without a viewing card(the friend's card had to be returned to Sky). I do not want to pay Sky a monthly fee, I just want to watch the free channels and record the odd program on BBC. Any thoughts?

      Thanks in advance. Jimit

What is the absolute minimum I need to do (pay) to record? And what do I need?
      Thanks

Re: New to Sky+ and need help

As you live in Geneva it's all a bit complicated. You would need to subscibe to Sky's cheapest package, and use a U.K address. You would need to explane that the box will not be connected to a phone line, and to pair the card to the box by phoning Sky.
The easiest way to do all this would be to do it from a u.k address and when it's all working, take it back to Geneva.

Re: New to Sky+ and need help

I have found some companies (Sky Tv cards in Europe Sky HD Tv in Austria, Portugal, Germany, France & Switzerland Sky HD TV cards for Europe for one) on the internet that sell viewing cards to Sky users abroad. I would get a British address and a viewing card (no Sky packages) valid for two years? and they pair it with the box somehow. What exactly does this viewing card give me that I do not already have and is this "card" worth it (75 for two years I think).

If all goes well, the ability to use the PVR aspect of a SKY+ box. But it could be just a card which provides access to other free channels. Without paying Sky you cannot use the PVR functions

Be very careful when using a 3rd party company that offers cards like these.

There has been cases where companies have been stealing a persons identity and address and getting dozens of viewing cards onto that address and eventually sky notices and turns them all off.

So make sure that these guys are legit before handing any cash over.
