I wouldn't worry too much about the Sky+ hard disk, I think it's pretty rugged and probably reverts to a locked position when the power is turned off correctly though the on/off button and not just by throwing the mains or pulling the plug.

One point worth noting is the need to have excellent ventilation on Sky boxes with hard disk drives. My ancient Pace box ran hot in the confines of my motorhome locker and almost boiled in Seville in June when the external temperature was 35 degrees. If it had been a hard disk model I'm sure it would have popped the Power Supply condensors.

Personally I'd just take my old Sky box and watch FTA - you are on holiday!

No, you can't activate the card yourself. You have to phone Sky. And if you try two swap between the same two boxes more than once, they will refuse. Sky is well aware that caravanners do this.

If you are concerned about the Hard Drive, carry a spare (and a screwdriver).
As stated above, the Hard Drive will "park" its heads, provided that you put the box into Standby then wait for the drive to "spin down" before pulling the plug.

Your card WILL work in the wrong box but not for the premium channels. However, I have a suspicion it will not allow the recording function if the card is not specifically activated for the SKY+. Try it.

Re: Sky+ Box in Motorhome - vertical mount?

We're just back from Spain - I thought I'd update everyone that gave me such helpful advice on how things went.

Three weeks away and all went well. The Sky+ box worked perfectly - even managed to record some pre set programmes when we were out for the evening (I wonder how long the box retains the memory to record these after being switched off?)

The box did get hot, even in standby. We left the TV locker door open rather than closing it and this solved the problem (probably due to lack of air flow in the cabinet).

      Thanks again for everyones help.
