Unhappy SKY+ Archiving to DVD Recorder

Just called Sky to upgrade to Sky+, having gone through the usual preamble I asked if it is possible to record from the Sky+ box to a DVD recorder and the Sky sales guy said this function is no longer possible due to copyright. I had always thought you could do this.... has something changed?

      Can anyone confirm or deny......?

If you can I will go ahead with the order otherwise its going to be a HDD recorder with the lack of Sky features.

Also do you get a choice of manufacturer for the Sky+ box?

      Thanks

well the copy funtion is still in the sky+ menu and it does say copy so where
the person got that info from seems weird to me, and the scart out that says to vcr. although i would use TV out to the recorder as its rgb and then daisy
      chain to the tv.

Re: SKY+ Archiving to DVD Recorder

      Welcome pog.

I can copy or record direct to my Sony DVD Recorder
RDR-HXD870 – hard disc or DVD. (Editing is easy on the Sony.)
The only thing you cannot copy are Box Office movies,
which are encrypted with a permanent warning on the screen.
If you copy from HD channels you do NOT get an HD recording
      but it does record.
My Sky+HD box is a Thomson which has performed very well.
I had no choice in the matter and you will find pro and anti
for nearly every make of box on this site.

Thanks for the replies, I guess either they've been briefed to say this or they modified the hardware / firmware recently. How long have you folks had your boxes if you don't mind me asking?

      Third option.
The person you spoke to was confused.
Phone again before you spend some big bucks.
You would be unlucky to get the same “expert” twice

Or wait for some more replies to this thread.
I think this topic has been raised before.
I will do a search and post a link if I can find it.

I have had Sky+HD for about 6 months.

Incidentally, my Toshiba TV has two HDMI connections
so both the Sky+ box and the Sony recorder is connected
      with an HDMI lead.

Re: SKY+ Archiving to DVD Recorder

By putting “Copy to recorder” in the Skyuser search box
      I found these results.

      http://www.google.com/search?q=Copy+....skyuser.co.uk

Try other words you might find more.

Re: SKY+ Archiving to DVD Recorder

My Thomson Sky+HD manual has an entire section explaining
how you copy to a VCR or DVD Recorder.

Quote: "To free up space on the hard disc, you can copy
recordings onto video or DVD. While copying you can watch the
recording being copied but you cant watch any other programme."
      5 step instruction follows.

The problem might be that recording to a VCR or DVD is considered
to be illegal- unless you own the copyright to the content -
      even though everyone does it.
And Sky gives you instructions on how to do it in the Sky+HD manual.
As does every manufacturer of VCRs and DVD recorders!

i can confirm that this week alone have copied over 20 hours to my dvd recorders hard drive. as stated by murdock the only things that will not copy are box office and some things from the anytime side of the hard drive.

Re: SKY+ Archiving to DVD Recorder

Many thanks for the input folks, called Sky again to order on the basis of these comments and indeed got another expert who confirmed you cannot archive to DVD when asked. I asked her to verify this info and a few minutes later she came back to say although it could be done the Sky engineer would not set it up for me! Thats not quite the same thing as it cannot be done.

      Order is now duly placed!
