      Re: Noisy sky plus box

The engineer has just telephoned about tomorrow's sky+ installation to confirm the appointment - I asked him which boxes he had, he said Thomson or Amstrad, I requested a thomson (in the absence of a Pace) which he was fine with (he only lives in the next street!)

Did I do the right thing choosing the Thomson?

had the engineer out and advised me that "what do I expect as the sky+ box is a hard drive and they are all noisy...just like your pc". he waggled a few wires and said any probs to call help line again. It was actually quite quiet for a day or two then it has just started to becom noisy again. So i think I'm gonna be ringing again a request a Pace Box. Here's hoping

      Re: Noisy sky plus box

Our Thomson was installed yesterday - It's not that noisy, there's a slight whirring noise from the hard drive, aswell as the fan noise - but neither are as noisy as my Samsung HDD recorder, and definately nowhere near as noisy as my 360.

They do eventually shut off too, when in standby - the fan runs until the box has cooled, then switches off.

So, is this the same amount of noise as everyone else experiences with a Thomson - or have I been lucky (*touches wood!!)..... so far?

Shame on Sky for supplying third rate equipment (which could be easily fixed). Noisy and irritating. Everyone asks what the loud whining is from under the TV. Sky does have a great ability for building up a bad rep and doing it fast.

      Re: Noisy sky plus box

Yes when it's recording, the disc and fan are running which is fair enough, but when it stops recording it still carries on making exactly the same noise. So the fan and the disc must both be running all the time, even if you're just watching the tv or even if the tv's off. I've had my Thompson Sky Plus box disconnected now anyway, so back to the old standard Sky box. Peace at last.

When Sky is switched on, the hard drive and fan WILL run, otherwise the live rewind wouldn't work! I find that mine switches off 5 -10 mins after I power it down, but like i said, it's not that noisy when compared to my PC or my 360!!

Yeah I guess it's just personal choice. Me I don't want to have to listen to the sound of a pc running in the background all the time just so I can record the odd program now and then. Pity you couldn't switch off the live rewind so the disc and fan could remain in standby the rest of the time. There is a menu option to set it to zero but doesn't make any difference to the noise.

I expect a noise from the hard drive (as this is normal) but should the fan/hard drive make a short high pitched buzzing sound when it starts up?? I find this really annoying.
