      SKY+ Transfer to DVD

      Hi all,

Just a quick query really, just got sky+ installed very happy with it. I am thinking of dumping my old vhs for a dvd player/recorder that upscales dvds and connects to my tv via HDMI any suggestions on the best make to get so I can save any programs I have recorded on my sky+ box.

      Thanks for you comments

      Lee

It depends on budget, Sony have release a couple of new dvd recorders that upscale to 1080p and also have a hard drive that can store pictures and mp3's onto it they start from 300ish upto 600 the only difference is mainly hard drive size ie RDRHXD870 has 160gb Hard Drive, RDRHXD970 has 250gb and RDRHXD1070 has 500GB, I personally think having one with a hard drive is useful as you can then easily delete the adverts on it before putting onto dvd disc.

Thanks for the info guys, my dufget isn't that large and a hard drive is not required as it would be mainly for any films i want to keep.

      Thanks again for your time

      Re: SKY+ Transfer to DVD

While we are on the subject, I am finding DVD recordings from the Sky+ box to be noticeably poorer quality than the original played back on the Sky+ box, this seems to be because the Sky box only outputs composite video on the second scart socket, no RGB! Do you guys think that the S-Video output from the SKy+ box would give a better recording?

I bought myself a Panasonic DRMEZ25 from Hughes Direct, its performing well, HDMI upscaling, and has a digital and analogue tuner.
To get over the Composite video problem you could always connect TV-DVD-Sky box to preserve the RGB connection.

      Re: SKY+ Transfer to DVD

      Penrhyn,

Thanks for the info so on your setup you are connecting this way Sky+ box scart RGB out to DVD Scart RGB in then DVD HDMI out to TV HDMI in?

So the DVD player passes the sky+ signal through all OK even if DVD is off then if you turn the DVD player on does that become the master in the chain and take over the output to the TV?

Whats the Sky+ qualitly like going this way is it as good as normal sky+ RGB scart out to TV RGB Scart in?

Sorry for the questions i'm a bit of a newbie with all this!

      Re: SKY+ Transfer to DVD

The DVD only outputs when its playing back or generating a menu, it remains on standby when switched off like a VCR and has a clock display, it does not become master when switched on. (You can set it to do this though!)
I've got a Scart connection to the TV to preserve normal Scart switching and can switch over to the HDMI cable from the TV, for some reason the HDMI control dosent seem to work well with my TV, a Sharp 37 inch LCD.
DVDs played back look good up scaled, and there is no degradation of the Sky box signal connected this way......as far as I can see...........but I'm no AV expert.
All I can suggest that you experiment till you get it working to your liking.

You can look at the Panasonic handbooks here

      Re: SKY+ Transfer to DVD

      penryhan,

forgive my stupidness so when your dvd is on standby you are watching sky which is connected just to the dvd player and the dvd player is connected to your tv with a hdmi and a scart? So do you watch sky through the scart or hdmi? is there any noticable difference in picture quality of sky between the two?

      thanks again

      lee

      Re: SKY+ Transfer to DVD

I watch Sky via the Scart, the HDMI output only upscales when playing back DVDs.
