Sky+ Box Faulty, or maybe not ..?

      Ok. Here's the story!

So i got Sky to do a moving home installation for a standard sky box.
I then bought the Wiring, Quad LNB & F-connectors from the sky engineer and installed myself for what I thought was an easy job.

Bought a Sky+ box from a friend of mine who's become quite a big distributer of reconditioned Sky+ Boxes. Perfect.

7 Days later (7 days of pouring rain) the box kept freezing whenever it was trying to record. Channels would freeze and sometimes it wouldn't record.

I returned the box back, HDD was tested and identified as faulty.
Get a new Sky + box. Install. Works good for a few hours. Then it freezes on a channel & won't respond to remote.
Pull the plug. Plug back in, and it won't switch on.
Turn it off for a few minutes, try again. Nothing.
Leave it for about 6 Hours. I come back to it and it switches on. Works perfectly again. Oddly whilst watching tv from time to time, for half a second video will slow down, and then speed up to catch up with the audio.

The seller has sold many hundreds of boxes, none with problems. Yet I have gone through 2 in the last week. I'm beginning to think it could be my installation doing the breaking, rather than the Sky+ boxes?

Any ideas how to test what's going wrong & where?
I have a Quad LNB installed which has self amalgamating tape wrapped around most of the connector aside from the very very top where I couldn't get my fingers around!
In the last 24 hours i've also pulled down the Plastic guard from the LNB which I didn't realise was there to protect from rain?

If the LNB messed up, then surely the sky box would still turn on & complain about signal?
If the LNB Shorted, then surely it would complain about signal?
If the LNB shorted the Sky+ box, surely the box would never switch on?

Am I just unlucky to get 2 dodgy Sky+ boxes?

I'm beginning to think calling a sky engineer would be a quicker way of solving this!

      Welcome Peter.

I moved from a standard box, 5 months ago, to Sky+.
It has been super reliable and I cannot imagine TV without it.
But over the months on this site there have been many posts
      about unreliable Sky+ boxes.
I recall one person who wrote that he had his box replaced by Sky
      EIGHT times.

So you have not been as unlucky as some.

Your own suggestion of calling in an engineer is what I would do
(with a box from Sky) - just in case.
But it might be worth waiting until July 1 when changes are rumoured.

Re: Sky+ Box Faulty, or maybe not ..?

I had nine Sky+ boxes in about 17 months. The last box went to the landfill along with the dish, the quad LNB and cable.

My Sky TV has been cancelled since March and i have not had one single call from Sky to either try and lure me back or quiery my cancellation.

      Also....

The Sky account was in my name and yet my wife manged to cancel the subscription by just giving my password to the advisor.

      What a cowboy outfit.

One thing though, I'm now totally stress free.......it's just not worth the hassle and the arguments.
