      Poor picture via DVD recorder.

I have recently aquired a Sony GX120 DVD recorder which is connected to a Sky+ box via scart. Although the Sky box is set to output RGB the picture quality when monitoring via the DVD recorder is conciderably poorer and more blurry than the direct RGB feed from the Sky box to the TV?? and hence the recordings made from the Sky box come out blurry as well. This happens whether the connection from the DVD recorder to the TV is made via RGB or component output. Pre recorded disc's play back perfectly.

Doe's the Sky box output RGB on the second scart socket?
The only setting within the recorder menu is to select S-video or RGB/Composite input. No setting to choose between RGB and composite.

      Hope this all makes sense!

      Any idea's welcome!

...although i've got different equipment (Liteon DVR/DVD recorder / Daewoo DVD/VHS recorder) linked through SKY+ I get the same as you. Low quality from both items when monitoring/pass through... Thus all recording are of low quality/blurry soft. SKY+ quality is great but try to record something onto DVD and that same 'gee whizz' programs looks 'why did I bother'....

I've tried top quality scarts (QED / Ixos) and via RGB component converter to no avail.....

Frustrating and makes a mockery of recording considering the monetary outlay....

The VCR Scart on the Sky box is RGB in only and Composite Video in/out.
Therefore you are only able to feed your DVD recorder via composite video.

If you rejig your connections by going Sky Box TV Scart >>> AV2(ext)DVD recorder AV1 (TV)>>> TV then I think you will be able to use RGB throughout.

      Hope this helps.

Does this apply to Sky+ boxes only? I have a standard box with one feed going through a Lite-on recorder and one going direct to the TV. Although my eyes are not like they used to be, both pictures appear indistinguishable. As I am getting Sky+ in the near future I hope I don't have to put up with a degraded signal.

Re: Poor picture via DVD recorder.

Hi there. I too have a Sony GX120 DVDR system. I have always connected my system up by TV Scart to TV Scart on Sky + box then the VCR scart on the Sky+ system to my Line 3 on my DVDR. Picture has generally been fine. However I tried to connect as described above i.e. TV Scart from DVDR to TV, then TV SCart on Sky+ to Line 3 on my DVD player. I did this as it has been a suggestion to prevent the copy protect issues on backing up programmes to the DVD player discussed on another thread on this forum. However, while the set up works fine, my DVD recorder is notpicking up the sky picture when I turn it on to record programmes of Sky on to DVD.

      Any pointers?

Standard and sky+ boxes are just the same, ie, composite signal from the VCR scart and RGB or composite from the TV scart.

Thanks Brian, but this is a resuscitated 18 month old thread. I now have Sky+HD, which has improved the all round picture quality, not just on HD.
