What's the difference between the Amstrad, Pace and Thompson Boxes?

This is a discussion on What's the difference between the Amstrad, Pace and Thompson Boxes? within the Sky+ forums, part of the Sky & Sky+ TV category; I've already got Sky + upstairs with a Thompson Box, seems OK most of the time - in 10 days ...

What's the difference between the Amstrad, Pace and Thompson Boxes?

I've already got Sky + upstairs with a Thompson Box, seems OK most of the time - in 10 days I'll be getting Sky+ downstairs with sky Multiroom - assuming I have any choice in the matter what is the best out of the 3 boxes?

I'm also getting a 32 inch LCD TV so bearing that in mind as well. What's going to give the best picture and be most reliable?

After having an original Panasonic box 7 years ago I was disappointed to see how they saved money over reliability by NOT putting a heat sink on the chips that got hot - which they clearly recognised might need one seeing as they had the holes drilled out to install on on the circuit board.

People tend to bad mouth Amstrad as a matter of course these days .. is it warranted?

Also is there photos of the three boxes?

Also do all three boxes use the same frequencies for the remote controls?

You wont have any choice on which box you recieve. Whatever the engineer brings is what you'll get. Although depending if he's in a 'good mood' chance your mit and ask him for whichever u fancy....you just never know what will happen!

google the box's and you'll find as many pictures as you can handle on them!

personally I would avoid an amstrad as they have never had a good reputation with all their sky+ models.

Re: What's the difference between the Amstrad, Pace and Thompson Boxes?

isn't the 2nd one a Sky HD Box? And aren't some of those pics standard Sky boxes NOT the Sky + boxes with Hard Drives? Looking at the remote controls I can't see the record buttons for instance in some of those pics you provided?

thanks for the effort but I was kinda hoping for more detailed (Larger photos) - bit surprised there isn't more on the web that's easier to find like on wikipedia.

Sky+ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

So do all the latest Sky + boxes have the controls on the TOP?

I've been teaching my mother the basic controls on the Thompson Box facia, if the buttons are on top on the new Box will make it a bit harder to get access to them first of all when they're on the shelf of a TV Stand.

Amstrad are crap pure and simple, In 34 years of life I have never had anything with Amstrad on it that has lasted or worked properly. Pace and Thomson are fine Pace being regarded as the best by most, but you can still get the odd bad one.
