I upgraded my Amstrad Sky+ with a 160GB Samsung Spinpoint myself & I'm the sort of person that is scared of opening my PC up in case I have a 'static charge', all went well with the upgrade and I have had no problems since. I would say that 160GB is more than enough recording space for anybody so IMO 250GB would be the largest you would ever need.

      sky+hd

      hello people,
      if you go to http://www.morlocks.co.uk/disk-change-v2.htm
there are full instructions for putting a bigger hd in your sky+ box and a list of recomended drives. 250 is the biggest drive he recomends.

Fitting a new hard drive is very straight forward. However some points to note:

If you fit a bigger hard drive then the fan may come on permanently so unless you fit a silenx fan it will sound like a jumbo jet is permanently taking off (swapping the fan makes the world of difference).

Depending on your box you may not get the full hard drive size as the latest version will reserve a protion of the drive for 'future' usege by sky.

I have found hard drives in sky boxes unreliable (even the ones provided by sky) and have had 3 hard drives fail. Fortunately most hard drives come with a 3 year warranty..... just dont rely on keeping anything special on there and transfer it to DVDr so that you dont risk losing it.

The Sky+ forum on digispy is very good and AUTOMAN ( http://forum.digitalspy.co.uk/board/...hp?userid=4145) created the instructions that have been posted in this thread.

      Good luck.

      Thumbs down Cowboy Sky engineers

If you are thinking of getting Sky+ try to get it from a local shop - not Sky. We have just bought Sky + through Sky's horrendous telephone system. We had to wait 2 weeks for the engineer to come. He installed the box but did not put in the required extra wire to the dish. He clearly knew that it would appear to work long enough for him to get away.
The second engineer - wait a week - did not bother to download the software - takes 10 mins - also knowing that it would appear to work OK.
Both the engineers came from Derby.
Then Sky could not 'pair up our serial number' so we were several days without access to Sky Sports for which we were paying.
All this dealing with their appalling telephone system talking sometimes to Scotland and sometimes to Pakistan.

Question Sky + and our old telly

After a lot of trouble we now have Sky + working and are very pleased with it and the ease of use. So much better than our old VCR.
However it appears to upset our 12 years old Sony TV causing the colour to flicker on and off - this does not happen on non digital programmes.
