      Any alternatives to Sky+?

      I live in a block of flats and the Sky installation is done by a 3rd party company. I currently have to pay 79 a year "line rental". I rang today and to upgrade to Sky+ it's 185 connection fee and 115 annual fee for the now 2 lines that will be needed.

      Is there any PVR system on the market that records to a HD and has a DVD as well that I can use with my sky card or is it best to get an add on? I don't fancy forking out all that cash every year.

      All you could do is, Get a simple HDD PVR and connect your Sky TV to it.
      Its similar but obviously will only record what is on the showing on the Sky Box.
      You will lack;
      • Sky Anytime
      • Record Two Programs
      • Scheduling (Recording Programs from EPG and Series Link)
      Or deaf what the installation people say, and get a cheap Sky+ box from eBay and get Coax Splitter, Turning your one feed into two!

      I think a splitter will cause problems because some channels are vertical polarised and some horizontal, which is why you need 2 feeds from the LNB. If you select 2 channels on different polarization with a splitter the 2 tuners will fight over switching the LNB. They switch the LNB over by sending different voltages up the cable.

      I don't record that much as the same time as watching something else. I just feel annoyed that I've been gotten by the short and curlies by this service company and have to pay them extra. It was bad enough paying 80 a year to service the lines, but 115 on top of my Sky subscription doesn't make it seem such a good deal at all.
