Should we all be complaining to sky because our 'over a year old' boxes havent been 'killed'?

Re: SKY are sending Kill Codes to boxes out of warranty

These seem to be very specific kill codes.

basically they mark a box/card as being in violation and send the codes.

However the box I was using was totally legit.

It was kind of funny really, the engineer turned up last Thursday with the reconditioned swap out box.

He did the usual power down, hold backup button and upgraded the firmware.

      Guess what?

Right before his eyes the kill code kicked in and killed that box.

He had no more boxes on the van, so I had to call SKY again for a another call out (90 days coverage in original 65 so no more charges for now).

Another engineer turned up on Saturday.

He walked in a with a Amstrad (the same as my old one) , took one look at the label on the box and said "no way". (It seems they have been replacing loads of out of warranty Amstrad PVR3's this week). He went out to the van and grabbed a PACE TDS470N (already loaded with latest Firmware and OS)

It activated, paired with the card in seconds and I now have functional SKY+ again.

btw I keep an old PACE box that is about 7 years old to hand for when the SKY+ dies, so I don't lose TV altogether.

Hopefully the 470N with be a bit more trouble free on the latest firmware as I know the earlier models had serious problems. At least I do not get that annoying ticking all night (You have to turn off instant rewind to stop Amstrad SKY stb's doing that. Plus this runs a lot cooler than the old box, no fan every 30 minutes now).

Anyway I am going to be kicking some butt at SKY public relations over this (I wanted to wait until I got the STB sorted out, before I approached them).

To those posting as to if this is what occurred to their box, short of opening the case and Jtag'ging the firmware their is no real way to be certain.

I am aware that many PVR and PVR2's have serious firmware problems, which is not updated will cause issues with recording.

Also concerning drives, only ever replace the drive with a (CE) AV one (they cost bit more), PC drives run too hot and consume too much power for the STB's already over stretched PSU.

A way around this is to extend the ribbon outside the case and supply the power from a separate PSU on a modded USB external case. As in bypass the USB part and use a longer IDE cable.

You make owning a Sky+ box sound like something out of 'Mission Impossible'

Re: SKY are sending Kill Codes to boxes out of warranty

Excuse me while i laugh here,
Amstrad PVR3's have always been "dodgy" at best and 'kill codes' ?? I'd love to know why if there are 'kill codes' Sky just don't 'kill' the boxes of people who haven't paid their bills and the boxes that are being used illegally abroad. ( i know you'll just say because these boxes that are abroad are revenue so killing them would be a loss of money! )
Obviously you have concrete proof of these ' so called kill codes' and that they exist 13th Hour otherwise Sky could have a 'Major Lawsuit' against you?

I'd say getting reasonable help via tech support is more like 'mission impossible'

The milk i brought on Sunday was off this morning.

I think the kill codes are evolving....
